MySQL and how to use it effectively!

The book is "A Desktop Quick Reference" just as billed on the cover. It is explicitly MySQL-centric and doesn't stray from that core message. It is extremely up-to-date considering the rapidity of movement in MySQL development progress.

I feel that its author, Russell Dyer is the kind of person who is easy to talk to and immediately be comfortable with based on his style and presentation in this book.

The content of this book is very well organized in keeping with the finest traditions at O'Reilly & Associates. There is an installation guide, tutorial, SQL syntax reference, MySQL built-in functions section(s), command-line utilities reference and programming languages API references for PERL, PHP and C. These API references demonstrate commonplace MySQL usage through clear, easy-to-read examples that make good sense.

It is a very comprehensive text that reads as easily as a favorite novel yet is concise enough to be your first "go-to" on MySQL issues you may face day-in and day-out. It is truly the "most advanced kingfisher" (cover animal) on the topic and, like the Pied kingfisher, it is lightweight and demonstrates keenly honed survival skills.

I use MySQL daily and I find it very useful and enjoyable. I don't want to become an SQL guru or even a DBA, as a programmer, I enjoy having MySQL In A Nutshell close at hand so that I can focus on writing code. Thank you Mr. Dyer (and the folks at O'Reilly) for a job well-done! I heartily recommend it to everyone using MySQL. The convenience of this publication clearly outweighs its cost. Newcomers and RDBMS "old-timers" will appreciate this book equally.

As with all other Nutshell books, this isn't a learning book, moreso a shorter reference manual for experienced developers who know what they are using and need a guide to help them out through the process. you need a background in SQL

Well the book certainly seems to cover MySQL's features quite comprehensively. But, as it is a reference manual, it does not attempt to teach you MySQL or the theory of relational databases. For a given MySQL command, the book's explanation is succinct and useful. Provided you already have a background in the area. Much of the book's discussion is probably already available in equivalent form in the online help. But hardcopy is nice to have.

Going through the functions, what you might appreciate about MySQL is that many of these are generic SQL functions. If you come from any other SQL implementation, your background will be relevant to much of the book.

About the Author

Carine McCandless is an entrepreneur, activist, and mother. She has been successfully self-employed since she started her first business at the age of nineteen. She is the sister of literary icon Chris McCandless and consulted closely with Jon Krakauer on his bestselling book Into the Wild. She also worked as a direct advisor and script contributor to Sean Penn for his film adaptation of the book. She lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia with her two daughters.

Interesting insight from the front lines

Although the writing is clunky and at times overwrought, the central purpose of this book is the much-needed insight into the incredibly damaging environment in which the 2 youngest McCandless kids were raised. I think the abusive environment made it very easy for Chris to cut off all contact in an attempt to define himself as a man separate from Walt. He did the extraordinary (abandoning his formerly materially-comfortable life for a meagre existence) because he was from an extra-ordinary situation. The very foundation of the second McCandless family was built on a lie, and that which is a lie cannot stand, it may take a few decades but it will fall. The core of the second family, which was Chris and Carine, seem more damaged than the first family (the other 6 kids) probably because of the persistently detrimental effects of living full time with two incredibly personality-disordered people. We don’t get much insight into the other mother, but it seems the very act of separating from Walt and claiming her own life and dignity back made a huge difference on the older kids. They all seem to be successful and ‘normal’ in a way that Chris and Carine are not. Perhaps their mother was not as nuts. Walt and Billie were so wrapped up in themselves and their dynamic drama that real parenting seemed to take a back seat. What little energy was left after trying to kill each other or the kids was spent on their careers and ‘looking good’ to the community. They are almost textbook narcissists.
Carine is not the easiest person to like; there are shades of her mother’s willfulness and self-righteousness in her actions, and she can seem more self-absorbed than self-reflective. Because she and Chris lost contact just at the point his story gets interesting, she can offer little insight into the man he was becoming, she can only reveal the boy he was.

A Very Sad Story

I have mixed feelings about The Wild Truth. It starts off with a bang. Right away, she's at her childhood home and declares, "I f$&#* hate this house." And I thought, "OK, we're in for some raw, unbridled honesty here." But that kind of forthright bluntness becomes muted as she takes on a more formal tone, in an attempt to write "literary."

Carine has my sympathy. Her life hasn't been easy and to live with constant reminder's of her brother's legacy and tragic end has got to be painful. But I wished the book would've kept its focus on Chris. This book is really about Carine's journey, her relationship with her parents, Chris, her siblings and her ex-lovers. She spends a great deal of time uncomfortably justifying and defending her own life and legacy, as she continually pats herself on the back or holds herself up as a pillar for us all to emulate. She just skirts the edges of sanctimony, never quite going over the edge. The writing is clunky, phrases such as "email missives" when just "email" would've worked are peppered throughout the book. I found myself skimming whole passages where she went into great detail about something like her daughter playing with, uh, a ribbon, I think, I don't know, I checked out at that part.

What really redeemed the book, for me, was strictly personal. There were scenes and recountings of conversations with Walt and Billie that were note-for-note perfect for ones I experienced with my own family that made me gasp. Plus, I've been fascinated by Chris' story for years, as I've felt he's a kindred spirit. I, too, have wandered around in nature, alone, searching, drinking in the peace.

I think this book will be interesting to anyone who has survived an abusive childhood or to those who are Christopher McCandless completists. Don't expect to be spellbound or to be absorbed in a book of great literary merit. Don't expect to learn too much about Chris' story, either. Take it for what it is: A very sad story told by a woman who has survived hardship and who seems to still be coming to terms with it all.

The rest of the story.

I read Into The Wild years ago and was blown away by the story. In 2011, I accepted a summer job in Denali and heard several times about the magic bus that coworkers would hike out to for overnight camping. In the stories, I heard negative comments about Chris McCandless, that he didn't know what he was doing. I never made the hike to the bus and deep down always wondered what really happened. Finding The Wild Truth, I picked it up and never stopped reading.
No longer a mystery, the back story has been shared, gut wrenching and honest, Carine shares the truth about the 'perfect' family. Thank you for sharing The Wild Truth

About the Author
John Bray obtained a PhD from the University of Birmingham in 1997, which was followed by postdoctoral positions at Birmingham and Queen Mary. He has held a lectureship at Queen Mary, University of London, since 2007. He is heavily involved with the online web-atlas of group representations, a popular resource in the group theory community.

Derek Holt has been at the University of Warwick since 1978, where he was made a professor in 2001. He has been active in group theory research for over 40 years and has over 100 publications to his name. He was awarded the LMS Junior Whitehead Prize in 1981 for his solution to the long-standing problem of classifying groups with more than one end. He has co-authored several books including the influential graduate text Handbook of Computational Group Theory (2005). He is Editor-in-Chief of the London Mathematical Society Journal of Computation and Mathematics, and is on the editorial board of several other journals.

Colva Roney-Dougal received a PhD from Queen Mary, University of London, in 2001, following which she held postdoctoral positions in Sydney and St Andrews. She has been a lecturer at St Andrews since 2005 and was appointed to Senior Lecturer in 2010. Her research on the classification of primitive permutation groups has been turned into highly-used databases in MAGMA and GAP. In addition, she is heavily involved in the popularisation of mathematics, and in this capacity is a regular presence on Radio 4's 'In Our Time' with Melvyn Bragg, as well as other national radio shows.

About the Author
Johnny Allen was the foundation director of the Australian Centre for Event Management (ACEM) at the University of Technology, Sydney, and continues teaching and research activities with that organisation. He was event manager for the Darling Harbour Authority from 1989 until 1996, and special event manager for Tourism New South Wales from 1996 to 1999. Johnny has an extensive career in event planning, including public events and festivals in both urban and regional areas. He was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2007 for his services to the event industry and event education.

William O'Toole has been creating and managing events for over 30 years, ranging from public festivals to corporate events. As an events development specialist, Bill worked for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Dubai (UAE), the European Union and numerous local authorities, establishing events strategies and event management curriculum and training. His event project management system (EPMS) is used in events around the world. he is the director of the Project management graduate program at the University of Sydney. currently, he is the senior adviser to the event management Body of Knowledge (EMBOK) based in the USA, Canada, UK and South Africa, developing international competency levels and standards for event management.

Rob Harris is a senior lecturer and the director of the Australian Centre for Event Management, University  of Technology, Sydney. Rob has been involved in event management training, education and curriculum development for more than 10 years and was a foundation director of the Festivals and Events Association of Australia. He has an international reputation as an event management educator, having delivered short executive development postprograms through to Masters level courses in a variety of locations around the world, including the United Kingdom, Malaysia, China and New Zealand, as well as throughout Australia. Rob is a co-author of the texts Festival and Special Event Management and Regional Event Management Handbook, as well as a number of event-related journal articles. he is on the editorial board of the international journal Even Management, and is the founder of the recently established Event Education and Research Network Australasia.

Ian McDonnell is a senior lecturer in the faculty of Business's School of Leisure, Sport and Tourism at the University of Technology, Sydney, where he teaches management and marketing of leisure and tourism services, including the very popular event management subject. In 1996, along with Johnny Allen he started the first higher education course in event management, the Executive certificate in Event Management. this book came from the lack of a text that could be used in such courses.

Although this book refers only to Australian festivals and events, it's loaded with management lessons, concepts and strategies that are universal. This is the best book I've been able to find on a subject that is scarcely written about (referring to large festivals). Thank you Johnny Allen, William O'Toole, Ian Mcdonnel and Robert Harris for sharing your knowledge.

Clear and concise. Follows NCCN guidelines which are available for free on its website. Not guidelines when follow-up scans should be performed for re-staging or to evaluate treatment in relationship to the first scans or the dates of the chemotherapy
