Not your average office romance

I don't know how she does it but Mayberry manages to take one of the most overdone romance story lines and make it fresh, funny and deeply emotional. A very satisfying read. I am drawn to love/hate office romances but most of Harlequin's seem to be of the "boss's mistress secret baby" variety. This one isn't. Its a spectacularly well done office (or any really) romance. Jake and Poppy are the perfect protagonists, both with their own insecurities vowing never to leave themselves open for pain and hurt until they fall deeply in love and don't even realize it. That's when the fun begins. Mayberry does a great job building up tension between these two so that the pages nearly sizzled (its a Blaze after all!). But I think my favorite parts are funny little quips and quotes *goodbye and thanks for the orgasms!* which really sets apart her style. Just a great romance. Highly recommended.

Another Winner from Mayberry

The setting is a newspaper, the Melbourne Herald. Our heroine is a former professional swimmer who is the the paper's newest writer. Our sexy hero makes it clear that he isn't happy with the newest staff member. Our heroine is determined to succeed at her new career and refuses to let the hero's rude attitude stop her.

Hmmm... let's start with Jake the jerk. LOL Okay, I totally get why our handsome, award winning writer is not happy when someone with no writing experience is given the job of columnist. He's worked hard to get to where he is and to have someone come in without paying their dues really ticks him off. Mayberry had her work cut out for her when she wrote Jake. He really was a jerk to Poppy when they first meet. Beyond his good looks, I didn't like Jake at first. I liked Poppy and Jake was mean to her. Bastard. So for me to come around to not only liking Jake but liking him with Poppy, Mayberry had to work her magic, and she did.

Poppy Birmingham gives up her swimming career when an injury forces her into early retirement. When offered a job as a columnist she takes it, looking for a career away from the pool. Her first day on the job doesn't go as well as she'd hoped. She does get to meet her hero, columnist and author Jake Stevens. She also gets a rude awakening when he's less than friendly, making it clear that he thinks she's just a dumb jock. This attitude doesn't help Poppy's insecurities. She knows the only reason she got the job is because of her experience in the sports world. She barely finished high school and with that in mind she has enrolled in an evening writing class.

I totally enjoyed Poppy's persistence. The way she refused to let Jake get to her while still finding him attractive. You go girl! Show him what you're made of! She was great when it came to standing up to Jake. There were times when she was barely able to hold it together but she did and I couldn't help but cheer her on. It turns out she's a natural when it comes to getting the story. Her insight into the athletes world gives her writing a unique perspective.

Jake was funny with his irritation and dislike for Poppy while grudgingly admitting, if only to himself, that he finds her attractive.

"He couldn't help noting the firm bounce of her ass as she walked. Probably she could crack walnuts with that, too. He wondered idly what she looked like naked. Most swimmers didn't have a lot happening up top, but she clearly had a great ass and great legs." page 20

He's caught and he doesn't even know it. LOL This is early on and Jake is still acting like an ass towards Poppy. Still wallowing in his own problems and willing to take out his frustrations on her. Jake is suffering major writers block. His one and only novel was a huge success but that was years ago. His personal life took a downward spiral and the only writing he has done are his columns for the paper. His second novel is still rattling around in his head and he can't seem to get it out. Maybe he's in need of a muse... or a kick in the ass. :)

After the sexual tension hits it's peak, Poppy and Jake give in to their attraction with a one night stand that continues beyond the one night. Neither wants anyone to know that they have become more than coworkers so they meet in secret. Soon it becomes more than just sex, and something or someone had to change. Mayberry does a wonderful job in developing not only Poppy and Jake's relationship but developing Poppy as a reporter and writer. As she writes, her confidence increases and she blooms. She develops friendships with her coworkers and begins to enjoy her new career. Jake, on the other hand, is closed off with a big "Do Not Enter" sign when it comes to relationships. And he is determined to not let anyone get close. He really needed to be hit with a 2 X 4 before he would acknowledge his feelings. Out of the two, Poppy was the stronger character, causing change in both her own life and Jake's. The way they played off each other and the way they ultimately encouraged each other made for an appealing couple.

Mayberry, for me, has developed into an author that I can count on to give me unique characters, uncommon situations and an interesting story. Fortunately I still have some of her back list to read through while waiting for her next release.

You've always done a great book, but this book shows you maturing with your writing even more. I really enjoyed it :) It was a wonderful storyline, plenty of fleshed out characters with grown-up emotions, and I really appreciate it wasn't the atypical story of a man who wouldn't commit but was different. A man who had committed and had gotten really burned. Thanks for giving us a "real" story. You are a wonderful writer and I look forward to more of your work!

Superb book

Very good book, a lot of information and the entire description of german army uniform regulations created in 21 september 1915 who introduced german "Bluse" uniform and other modifications.

the book only fails to not have the final part of the original book that describes rank insignia regalia and other badges. I got the third party buying from another source.

Thank God for Baseball

I expected a review of the phenomenon of baseball in American culture. What I didn't expect was good scholarship and fine theological reflection! Both are there. The essays are wonderful and examine the parallels between Christianity and baseball from the perspectives of history, ethics, and hope. Read it before your next trip to the ball park!

Complicated but compelling

I wound up picking and choosing chapters of this book because often got lost in the theological issues. The chapters on Jackie Robinson and Rickey, Christy and Pete, and Shoeless Joe were very interesting. My own father was a young mill league player in 1919 and even though I was a "girl" he loved to share with me the stories of the glory days of the game. This book brought much of him back.

While I have always been a strong supporter of Title IX, I'm not sold on the interest among women to play professional baseball. Likely the WMBA among other pro groups are more compelling interests for our gender. Not really my call, but the ladies really did not convince me of the need for a pro ladies league.

Admittedly I had to make myself stick with the "Old Man and the Sea" along with the other theology based chapters, I just could not wrap my brain around some of the reasoning. No matter, I'm of the opinion that we do need to attempt to understand stuff that appears incomprehensible and challenging.

Now, let's get busy and get Shoeless Joe in the Hall of Fame. The book made a great rational case for righting a wrong.

A good book that did not quite meet all my expectations.

I read this book as I continue to develop my own theology of baseball. I enjoyed reading this book but wish it would have gone a little deeper. The author's main theological issue involves creating an inclusive kingdom which he compares with Jackie Robinson breaking through the color barrier in baseball. For a deeper theological connection, I suggest John Sexton's Baseball as a Road to God.

Gr 7 Up—When readers last saw Phaet in Dove Arising (Viking, 2015), she was fleeing the Moon in order to escape its controlling and dangerous ruling authority, the Committee. Now, Phaet finds herself in exile on Earth, forced to hide her true identity. She is miserable, desperate to find a way to return home and save her young siblings from the wrath of the Committee. She soon finds her opportunity when war breaks out on Earth. It becomes clear that the Committee's power has spread so far that even Earth can no longer escape its influence. Upon her return to the Moon, Phaet is surprised to discover that she has become a symbol of a burgeoning revolution: the "Girl Sage" who stood up to the Committee. The ending sets the stage nicely for the action that is to come in the next installment. Bao has employed a multitude of familiar young adult speculative fiction tropes here, including a controlling and immoral government, a reluctant heroine, and a guilt-ridden love triangle. While the first volume primarily focused on Phaet's militia training, this one steers more toward romance and the building of new alliances. Despite this emphasis on relationships, however, the characterization falls flat, with the main love interest reading more like the concept of the perfect boy than as a real person. Luckily, there is still plenty of action to keep readers intrigued. An Thrilling and Intoxicating Sequel!

"Dove Exiled" the intriguing and absorbing second novel in the "Dove Chronicles" opens with the threat of an attack on Saint Odan where Phaet Theta has taken refuge with Wes's Earthbound family after escaping the Moon. In an atmosphere of harmony and high-ideals Wes's father keeps the peace with the Sanctuarists an unobtrusive law force but their hatred for the "demons" on the Moon is all too apparent.

As Phaet under the guise of the Pacifia refugee Fay blends into Odan society she learns not only of an alliance between Pacifia and Base IV to attack Saint Oda to transform it into a strategic military base, but of the ongoing torture of her brother Cygnus. With the Lunar Militia hot on her trail, she makes an agonizing decision when an opportunity to return to the Moon arises. Although longing for Wes after admitting their feelings for each other and knowing the Committee wants her dead, Phaet's determined to save her brother and continue Dovetail's rebellion.

The plot is fast-paced and action-packed as Phaet and Wes not only struggle against the alliance intent on destroying Saint Odan and killing the islanders, but she and Umbriel break into the prison to free Cygnus on Base I only to find him missing and the militia determined to capture her. With every challenge, deception and betrayal that Phaet faces the plot thickens as the intensity and suspense builds.

In an emotionally-charged setting as Phaet haunted by guilt struggles to stay rational, copes with the loss of friends and fights for her life, the plot moves quickly and smoothly to an explosive confrontation at the end that begs for a third book. In an exciting story that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end, even the romance is heightened when Phaet who's about to say goodbye to Wes finally admits her deep feelings for him.

As in all well-written and intoxicating plots the complexity and realism of its characters infuse the growing drama with passion and high-energy and this story is no exception. Phaet (aka Fay) driven by guilt to return to the moon is determined, resilient and brave knowing the Committee wants her dead. A sixteen year old who's action-oriented and says little, she has to deal with her new celebrity status as “Girl Sage,” a symbol of the rebellion. Wes Carlyle duty-bound to protect his family is kind, caring and accepting, frank about his feelings for Phaet, even though he knows they'll be separated. Of the other characters in the story Murray Carlyle haunted by her scarring is angry and broken; Phaet's sister Anka defiant and wilful; Eri Phi loyal and selfless; and Umbriel protective, stubborn and honest.

I loved "Dove Exiled" a thrilling sequel to "Dove Arising" and can't wait to see where Karen Bao will take the plot and characters next.

The Girl Sage sparks the rebellion!

Phaet, reborn as Fay, is known as a former engine room slave from Pacifia instead of being known as the fugitive and Lunar's rebel daughter. Phaet takes refuge with Wes' family at Saint Oda on Earth. However, the Odans detest the Lunars and believe they are Godless demons. Odans remind me of Amity and Agnegation factions from Divergent. They do not like weaponry and fighting. They tolerate peace and helping each other. However, when Tourmalinians show a torture video of Phaet's brother back on the moon, Phaet feels guilty leaving her family with the totalitarian Lunar government. Things take a turn when Phaet finds out the Lunars allied themselves with Pacifica and are going to take Saint Oda.

At first it was hard for me to get into Dove Exiled. Set four months after the events in Dove Arising, I had difficulty learning all the new characters and about the Odans. However, after time I became invested with the plot line. The pace is slow for the first third of the book but it definitely picks up for the remaining two thirds. It's interesting how Wes is willing to help out Phaet even though his parents don't agree with his actions.

Phaet is willing to help Wes despite the fact that she has to wait to save her family a little bit longer. The friendship between Phaet and Wes is strong. They will do anything for each other. Transitioning from Earth to the Moon is a little bit rocky but I am glad that I am able to see what is going on both planets. Reading about how Lunars and Earthens are affected by the Committee is crucial.

It is fascinating to see the Base IV again and the Militia Phaet and Wes trained with only to be targeted as enemies now. However, not everyone on the lunar base is hunting Phaet and Wes. The couple is in trouble as Phaet tries to save her family while Wes tries to save his. Phaet can only trust a few people on Base IV. Phaet and Wes show some romantic interest in each other but each have their own priorities and they agreed to carry out saving their families first. I admire that. They don't let lust cloud their vision of what's important.

Karen Bao definitely did a lot of research about terrains and ecosystems. She spent time weaving her interests in biology and chemistry into her novel. As a lover of biology, I appreciated how clever she incorporates the science facts within the novel. It adds some depth to the story.

Phaet, known as Girl Sage to the Dovetailers, represents hope like Katniss does as the Mockingjay. Dove Exiled is a solid sequel to Dove Arising. It will satisfy readers who enjoy The Hunger Games trilogy and the Divergent trilogy.

Excellent Cards! Great Quality!

I LOVE these cards. We give them to our yoga teacher training students to assist with the memorization of the Primary Series and also with help in learning the Sanskrit names of each pose. I've purchased many of these cards over the year and everyone loves them!! Great quality and I love that they come on a ring. The cards can be removed from the ring and my students lay them down on the floor as they learn the sequence. I'd give it more stars if that were an option! They are a little pricey but I feel like it's completely worth it!

One tiny flaw... or maybe not so tiny

These are great cards. They're bound in a ring, so you can remove some poses you can't do yet, or reorder if you're feeling wild and crazy! There's one flaw, though. In some poses, you can't see what the model is doing with his feet, which makes all the difference in janu shirshasana, for instance. I found myself making notes on some of the cards, so that I have the poses in the correct order. Even if it would be unreasonable to have a photo that showed his foot position, a note on some of the poses would have been helpful for those of us still learning.

A great read

Loved the book, loved the story line and am so excited for the next book. It's fun, adventure, fantasy and totally impossible to put down. I started reading last night and was up until dawn. It's so great to find a book with such a original storyline and with such fun and fascinating characters. I highly recommend this book!

A wonderful journey

This book is a fun exciting journey into a world filled with conflict. The book starts off which excitement halfway through the first chapter. With each chapter I find myself wanting more. The main character is extremely fun to follow. Reminds me of Enders game and Harry Potter. Highly recommend.

Unique storyline kept me hooked!

I absolutely loved The Names They Were Given. I found myself engrossed in the world of the Consortium from the first chapter and enjoyed delving deeper into the islands as the story went on. The characters are fantastic - relatable and multi-dimensional with just the right amount of wit and humor. Delle isn't your average heroine, which made me like her even more. The author does a wonderful job of creating an entirely new world and I loved how unique the storyline is from anything I have read previously. Highly recommend for anyone looking to invest in a new series. So looking forward to the next book!
