Heartbreaking, but trite

This is a tragic tale of child abuse by an adult survivor who had two sets of abusive parents. Their behavior was criminal. The writing is rough and the narrative rambles. Details are lacking. Interestingly, the writer often mentions the old classic A child Called It. My research strongly suggests his was a fabricated story that made Pelzer a millionaire many times over. I do not doubt Tuck's sincerity for a second, but this is not an engaging read. The story has been told many times and much better by others. The book seems more about launching a career as a lifestyle coach than drafting a memoir.

I have not reviewed a single book on Amazon up until now, but feel compelled to do so for this book. After reading "JUnit in Action", "Head First Java", and "Professional Android Application Development" (all excellent), this book felt like it was written by people who had never read a book on programming or software, nor hired any editorial staff whatsoever.

Although they do cover many of the main topics of Selenium and it is an introduction to the testing framework, that's where its resemblance to a textbook ends. The language is unclear. Examples are poorly explained and contain errors. The general layout of the book is not intuitive. They do not go into any depth with each main concept at all. In sections of the book they restate the previously explained points or include duplication of code for the sake of lengthening the book - seriously. It's as if they were writing a secondary school paper that had to be 200 pages long and they just made it. It could have been 50 pages shorter.

Like the Selenium project, this book should be open source. I would rather have my money back, be able to read it online for free, and submit edits. Everyone would benefit. If you are new to programming, read up on Javascript and read all online Selenium documents before reading this book, otherwise it may be a waste of time - or worse, scare you away from using Selenium at all. If you already know Selenium pretty well and are a novice programmer, you'll get useful information from it, but be saddened by it's lack of quality. I wish there were something better. Maybe I should start writing.

The problem with this book is on Selenium 1, and it apparently came out just when Selenium 2 was coming out. Fortunately Selenium 2 seems to be pretty well backwardly compatible, so you can use what is presented in the book, but the bad news is that it contains only a tiny bit of Selenium 2 content, so it is already pretty dated. I think the publisher should have just waited a month or two and made it a Selenium 2 book.

Selenium 1.0 Test Tools: Beginners Guide

Selenium 1.0 Testing Tools: Beginners Guide is exactly that. It is a book that is aimed at those who are beginners with the technology (not necessarily beginners to testing or coding). Overall, David Burns has written a good book here. The conversational style is helpful; you feel like you are talking to a team-mate who is explaining the system to you in a friendly and engaging manner. The exercises selected are of a level that you are eased into working with the technology and the tools. The first five chapters are dedicated to the Selenium IDE, which for many testers is all they will ever see of Selenium, and for many testers who want to automate front end tests on Firefox, it may be all they ever need. If that's the case, the first five chapters will give you a lot of practical information and give you some solidly ninja levels skills to write tests and make them robust and solid. They will be limited to the Selenese format, but even with that limitation, there's a lot of cool things that a tester can do, from declaring and using variables, calling JavaScript events, and managing for examining objects and creating robust tests to help enhance testing.

The second half of the book deals with Selenium Remote Control (RC) and here is where some deviation takes place, at least for me. First off, I did not have the exact environment described in this book. I was close, but I had some set-up differences that caused some headaches. A number of the examples in the book just flat out would not work for me. Since my environment was different than that recommended (a Windows 7 machine on a 64-bit Athlon processor), I can't hold David responsible for my roadblocks. It does, however, show a critical issue with the Learn by Doing format of this book. If everything is the same, the format is terrific, and the first 6 chapters I was able to accomplish most of the project objectives and practice using the tools as listed. When I found myself stuck, there was little I could do to get around the issues. Be aware of that going in, your mileage may vary with the examples shown in the book.

Another frustration I had was specifically in Chapter 7, which dealt with writing your own scripts in Selenium RC. The chapter is structured around using the IntelliJ Idea Java IDE. In and of itself, this is not a bad practice, but when things start to not line up due to environments being different, adding an IDE into the mix can add even more complications and details to keep track of. While I appreciated the clean nature of integrating JUnit and the Selenium libraries under one roof, it added another layer that I personally felt might have been better handled by not including another tool. Agreed, CLI's are not sexy and they require repetition that the IDE doesn't, but I would have appreciated more specific examples and more complete examples. As it is, to get around the behaviors I was seeing, I generated tests in the IDE, saved the structure as a separate file, and then loaded that file to write my tests.

Again, these criticisms are actually pretty minor, and they are colored because my own environment had trouble with the examples (of which David states that 64 bit environments will have issues). Overall, this is a great first effort in describing the tools and the methods involved in loading, installing, and working with the Selenium stack. As the technology becomes more well known and solidifies, I'd like to see what David does with a future Selenium treatment. There's a lot of gold in here, and a few pieces of pyrite (and again, I have to take responsibility for my own panning), but all in all it fills a void for documentation for Selenium with a continuity that a beginner can appreciate and get productive with quickly.

About the Author
Professor emeritus of operations research at Stanford University. Dr. Hillier is especially known for his classic, award-winning text, Introduction to Operations Research, co-authored with the late Gerald J. Lieberman, which has been translated into well over a dozen languages and is currently in its 8th edition. The 6th edition won honorable mention for the 1995 Lanchester Prize (best English-language publication of any kind in the field) and Dr. Hillier also was awarded the 2004 INFORMS Expository Writing Award for the 8th edition. His other books include The Evaluation of Risky Interrelated Investments, Queueing Tables and Graphs, Introduction to Stochastic Models in Operations Research, and Introduction to Mathematical Programming. He received his BS in industrial engineering and doctorate specializing in operations research and management science from Stanford University. The winner of many awards in high school and college for writing, mathematics, debate, and music, he ranked first in his undergraduate engineering class and was awarded three national fellowships (National Science Foundation, Tau Beta Pi, and Danforth) for graduate study. Dr. Hillier’s research has extended into a variety of areas, including integer programming, queueing theory and its application, statistical quality control, and production and operations management. He also has won a major prize for research in capital budgeting.

Associate professor of quantitative methods at the School of Business at the University of Washington. Dr. Hillier received his BS in engineering (plus a concentration in computer science) from Swarthmore College, and he received his MS with distinction in operations research and PhD in industrial engineering and engineering management from Stanford University. As an undergraduate, he won the McCabe Award for ranking first in his engineering class, won election to Phi Beta Kappa based on his work in mathematics, set school records on the men’s swim team, and was awarded two national fellowships (National Science Foundation and Tau Beta Pi) for graduate study. During that time, he also developed a comprehensive software tutorial package, OR Courseware, for the Hillier-Lieberman textbook, Introduction to Operations Research. As a graduate student, he taught a PhD-level seminar in operations management at Stanford and won a national prize for work based on his PhD dissertation. At the University of Washington, he currently teaches courses in management science and spreadsheet modeling.

Simplifies a potentially devastatingly confusing subject!

This is, hands down, the best textbook I have ever used! I suck at math and I hate math. I have been dreading taking this course my entire degree, but thankfully we are using this textbook. It teaches from a management perspective, so the focus is shifted to the use of Excel and other technology which handles the complex formulas for you. Although the mathematical rationale and methods behind the calculations are introduced, it is kept to a "need to know" basis, unlike other textbooks I have seen where the author can't seem to help themselves from going into a "look how many formulas I can spout!" tangent which totally throws me off course. Also, the chapters use a "storytelling" method of teaching which is incredibly helpful and keeps a potentially painfully dry subject from getting dull. One or several case studies are introduced complete with background, dialogue, and a conversational writing tone which makes it easy to follow and see how the subject could be useful in your line of work. I am doing surprisingly well in a class I was certain I would "barely pass" and I truly think this textbook is the reason! :)

I learned a ton from this book and would highly recommend it even if you're not in college

This textbook was required for my college class. Our class focused mostly on using Microsoft Excel through each chapter. I learned a ton from this book and would highly recommend it even if you're not in college. The only thing I disliked is that the publisher did not use color inside the text which would have been very helpful when viewing the numerous spreadsheet examples that require special formatting, including color coding.

Excellent Text

I gave 5-stars based only on content. The price is way too high and for that I would give a lower rating!

This book was required for a course and was one of the few that I kept since it provided very clear explanations. Most examples are shown using Excel with plugins. However, you could apply the same methods using your chosen tool (SaS, R, Python) since this book does a great job of explaining how to set up a problem and use a tool to help you solve the problem.

If you're looking to get more into the weeds of Operations Research, this may not be your book unless you need a gentle introduction and your'e at the beginning of it all. I would recommend Winston's book if you want to dig more into OR.

Good starting point for the second exam

Been through this book and the one before it (70-346), and going to take the 347 exam as soon as I complete the 346 exam. I studied both books one after together so I could get everything as a complete package, and because I actually manage a hybrid ex2010 / o365 environment so the info comes in handy. This book will provide you with a excellent foundation for the exam. The information in the book is laid out in a nice logical manner with plenty of screen shots. The author does a good job of explaining the material in a easy way. You should not have a problem following the book.

That being said, before you take the exam you should have some hands on experience to help with the concepts and I always recommend some additional exam prep like exam practice exams to ensure that you have everything down. Write down and really know your powershell commands.

While it does has a lot of information there are ...

While it does has a lot of information there are some glaring errors in the information (one example that comes to mind is in one of the questions at the end of the section. Two answers are the same word for word but only one of them is correct according to the book) and in the presentation (sentences just end without making any sense). Not to mention the test has recently changed so this book is out of date (hard to keep a book about cloud technology in date really).

If the book gets updated I would then give it 4 stars as I would hope the errors would also be corrected.

Don't waste your money

I bought this book from a different source so not going to come up as verified but if you try to pass the test with this book you will fail.
The material is ridiculously outdated and some of it is outright wrong.
The Q and A has glaring gramatical errors, repeated answers, spelling mistakes and more.
Don't waste your money, I'm not sure how I'm going to study for this test now but I know this book will make for great kindling at my next camp fire.

As an asexual and someone who shamelessly enjoys characters in love and characters in dangerous situations (like when, say, a murderer is after one of them) and especially characters who are in love in dangerous situations, I was SO excited to read this book, and I found myself incredibly let down. I'm going to start with the good, which was the dialogue between Malachi and Bran was hilarious. Malachi's wit had me laughing out loud at points, and his back and forth with Bran was natural and amusing. It was a cute book, but I found myself bored and not really wanting to finish the book after the killer was revealed.

The character relationships and family dynamics, while backstories were varied and given only in pieces that didn't make everything immediately known to the reader, were a bit cliched at times. As a reader I shouldn't be able to pick up on the fact that "Bran's head swam" or "Bran's head was swimming" was used often enough to me to say 'hey, this was used really recently... like, two pages ago.'

The sex scenes were excessive and unnecessary and didn't really serve to move the plot of the book forward in any way. It did show certain aspects of Bran and Malachi's developing relationship, but, again, it seemed... excessive. I stopped keeping track of how many there were after I think five.

There are asexuals who do things for the sake of their partners, yes, and there are asexuals who have sex simply for the stimulation and not because they are sexually attracted to anyone, but a conversation about Bran being willing to do things with Malachi despite his sexuality and the fact that he'd never really be interested would've suffied. Or even a singular sex scene showing that development and dynamic of their relationships rather than... however many pages of sex scenes I found myself skimming over, bored because - oh right, I have no desire to have sex. I certainly have no interest in reading about it. Again, it seemed excessive and didn't really seem to serve any sort of purpose for moving the plot of the book (you know, imminent danger, people trying to kill one of the boys) forward.

Other people may have really enjoyed the sex scenes, from what I skimmed they over they weren't terribly written, so if that's the kind of thing you're into, go for it. Overall, personally, I was just... really let down by this book. It was an amusing, quick read, but I won't be downloading the sequel.

I'm so glad I did

Oh my, I just finished reading and I am still smiling. The blurb intrigued me and I thought why not, take a chance. I'm so glad I did. Bran is shy, sweet and asexual. Malachi is short, outgoing and sweet on Bran. They were so cute together and accepting of each other. I loved how Bran grew stronger in who he was and what he wanted, which was Mal. I had never read a story where someone was asexual. I knew the term but not what it meant. This was an adorable story that showed me a little bit about what it's like. Thank you to Michaela Grey for putting this story out there!

Lovely representation of asexuality

When I started the first chapter of this book, I thought I knew exactly where it was going- the characters acted as exposition pieces that gave a lot of information in a short amount of time. However, as you get into the story and get to know the characters, they begin to flesh out, and the exposition dies down so that you can sit back and enjoy the tale.

You start with the likable Bran, an asexual who loves to bake and attends university, and Malachi, another university student who seems to have whatever he wants. The two meet properly, and the love story goes in a pleasantly different direction from what I expected.

This story avoids the tropes of jealousy, of lack of communication, and others that normally make you roll your eyes in romance stories. The characters do fight, yes, but they have reason to, and the communication between those who care about each other was refreshing. The sex scenes are there, but they are brief and easy to skip if you feel the urge to do so. They weren't overly explicit, which was something I appreciated.

I won't go into too much more detail, but this is a nice representation of an asexual character without having their aceness shoved into your face. That said, this is representation of a romantic asexual, so I hope in future works we'll see other variations of aces. I'm hopeful, as the author presented other sexualities in the same casual, matter-of-fact manner that I liked about Bran's orientation.

My Favorite Marketing Guide

Steve Mitten's Marketing Essentials for Coaches covers everything coaches need to develop an ongoingly useful process for finding and attracting clients. What's unique in Steve's view about marketing is that he focuses on staying centered as an evolving professional and basing your client outreach on what is authentic to you, the coach. You won't reach every possible prospect, he clearly states, but you can focus on who are the best prospects for you. Steve provides very helpful materials on coaching niches, branding, outreach/networking, managing the emotional ups and downs of having your own business, and how to keep growing as a coach. As a graduate of Steve's year-long marketing program where we used this book as our guide, I can attest to its value in helping me learn how and where to focus my time and energy in building my coaching business.

Steve Mitten is a leader in the coaching industry, with a passion both for coaching and for helping coaches succeed in their businesses that is evident throughout this book. Marketing Essentials is filled with practical ideas that have been tested and work. This book covers everything you need to build your coaching business, from finding your niche, to branding yourself, to exploring a wide variety of ways to market and promote your coaching. Everything is clear and well-organized and there's enough detail without being overwhelming.

One of the things I love about this book is the advice from other coaches that's interspersed throughout the text. I also appreciate the attention paid to developing the "being" side of building your business, as well as the overall spiritual approach. And there is just so much valuable advice here that's worth the cost of the book many times over.

Whenever new coaches ask me for a book recommendation for marketing their businesses, Marketing Essentials is always where I point them. If you want to benefit from Steve's experience to shorten your learning curve and get your coaching business off the ground faster and easier, I recommend this book for you, too.

If you are unable to afford a mentor coach or a business coach, Marketing Essentials for Coaches ably discusses the emotional and busiiness challenges that we Coaches must work through to properly set up, operate and maintain a successful coaching practice or business. I do a lot of reading on the subject of business start up and development. Author Steve Mitten's insights and business strategy are consistent with those of contemporary authors. The best part is that he has tailored very actionable strategies to the subject of coaching. This should help us understand and implement and experience good results quicker. I found this book extremely valuable.
