About the Author
I write and podcast about eating disorder recovery for adults at tabithafarrar.com. There you can find resources on recovery and information on eating disorders. This is very good insight into eating disorder patient world, & their self-absorbed habits that go on and on until admission to say I need professional help. On key pages, I made notes about what was was key to her moving on to better health. Being safe to get help. Not all is spelt out because anorexia is very complicated. Proofing it's very realistic. Buy it . Especially, for pyschiatrists and parents of eating disorder child.

About the Author

A native of Australia, Geoff Mills moved to the USA in 1986 to undertake doctoral studies at the University of Oregon. After completing his PhD in 1988, Geoff accepted his first teaching position at Southern Oregon State College (now Southern Oregon University). After 12 years of teaching, Geoff moved in to university administration where he served as Dean and Professor of Education in the School of Education at Southern Oregon University. Most recently, Geoff has returned to the faculty in the School of Education as a professor of education. 

 

Geoff has traveled extensively and given invited action research presentations in Australia, New Zealand, Greenland, United Kingdom, Canada, and many states in the United States. In addition to Action Research: A Guide for the Teacher Researcher, 5e, Geoff is also the active author of Educational Research: Competencies for Analysis and Applications (2012; with L. R. Gay and P. Airasian), now in its 10th edition.

Do not waste money on this option

What it is: Internet access only textbook (meaning you cannot read it offline). Also, it can only be used for 180 days (which really makes it a rental even though that is not indicated on this purchase). Once logged in, the e-textbook is very difficult to navigate. It is too cumbersome if you are used to a hard copy textbook. Do not waste money on this option.

Book content is fine - but the delivery method is ridiculous!

I have no complaints about the book itself but about the format and related issues.

I have purchased text books for my kindle previously and really enjoyed having them in such a format. I also shop frequently on Amazon purchasing a variety of items.

That said, I was shocked when, as another reviewer stated, a thin envelope arrived with basically a passcode for TEMPORARY access to the book. Another reason I thought I was getting a hard copy book - why do they need to ship a piece of paper with an access code? They could have instantly emailed me all the information I needed. Thank God I didn't pay shipping for this garbage!

I thought this was the book with an access card to additional online content (I now see the ad explicitly states it is an etextbook but I am certain when I purchased this item it did NOT state as such). The tiny pamphlet I received in the mail states it can be downloaded and that a "low-cost printer version" can be purchased if you already paid for the e-text. You cannot download the book on a computer - only a tablet. I am not as familiar with Kindle fire's operating system but it does not appear I can download it on my "old school" kindle touch at all. In addition, I note to get the "print" version - you have to pay $68+ dollars. But it isn't even in a bound book - it is printed and placed in a three-ring binder. That is not a low cost print version! Also, when I use the "in-app" purchase to purchase a print version, it says I can only buy this three ring binder print version with an access card that I already have. What a joke!!

I could let go of not being able to download and the temporary access and not having it on my kindle - but the worst part of the book is the interface Pearson uses. It is slow, shotty (the highlighting is worse than if the document was a pdf) and just plain irritating.

I work in an office with PCs all day and various software; I am a gamer and electronic enthusiast - I have multiple PCs, tablets (android & windows), game systems, etc. - and I am flat out disgusted with the website and interface. It is worse than Adobe 10 years ago. I cannot believe I paid for temporary access to such a pile of garbage. Yes, I can "see" and read the book, but that is about all.

The publisher (and to a certain extent, the author) should be ashamed. This is ridiculous!

Needs to be clear about being an ebook

As I purchasing this book, using the ISBN that my college required, I was happy to find it on Amazon. The book, however, was not was I was expecting. When it arrived, it came in a large thin envelope, looking nothing like a book. Turns out it was an ebook. I absolutely hate ebooks and would have never purchased this if the heading said ebook. It does have this knowledge within the description, however I would suggest placing the fact that it is an ebook in the heading so students know what they are purchasing right away.
Also, this is the 4th textbook I have purchased off of Amazon. I have had to return all of the because it was not the correct book. I've decided Amazon will no longer by my shopping place for textbooks....I should have learned before!

On almost every occasion he was the first blind person involved in whatever was going on the first blind student enrolled in the Orlando Public School System, the first blind student admitted to Davidson College, and the first blind doctoral student in mathematics at the University of Washington. Besides describing the various successes and failures Baggett experienced living in the dark on the sunny side, he displays in this volume his love of math and music by interspersing short musings on both topics, such as discussing how to figure out how many dominoes are in a set, the intricacies of jazz chord progressions, and the mysterious Comma of Pythagoras.

This book tells the story of a young American boy blinding himself by accident and ending up an internationally well-known expert on harmonic analysis and wavelet theory. Born in 1939 and becoming blind in 1944, the author experiences being one of the very first blind students main-streamed through the public school system, college, and university. The story is by and large a happy one and we are given many examples of relatives, friends, teachers, and strangers helping the blind boy, the blind adolescent or the blind man with all these practical things that are so self-evident to us seeing persons that we just take them for granted: how to find your way from one classroom to another in a school full of children running around, how to match the colors of your clothes, how to order from a menu, ow to find an empty seat in a seminar room, or how to travel to a conference. All these important details of life are commented on in a positive spirit. The author lives in a friendly world, even if that world is arranged for seeing people by seeing people.

All in all this is a nice book to read. It gives a hint at what it was like to grow up blind in America during the second half of the last century. It also gives a picture of how it is possible for a blind boy to become a world-famous expert in mathematics. Many will know Professor Lawrence (Larry) Baggett for his work on harmonic analysis, wavelet theory and unitary representations of groups. He is a world leading mathematician and has been for many decades. However, there is something you might not know about Larry, he is blind.

This book serves as Larry's memoirs, describing everything from his musical exploits and mathematical pursuits, to his personal life. Many of these moments, feelings and activities have been experienced by each of us, and often he describes a professional environment that lots of us are familiar with. However, Larry talks about them from a completely different, and in many cases, unique position.

Larry lost his sight after an accident with a paring knife at the age of five. But this did not hold him back; he went on to be the first blind student in the Orlando public school system, the first admitted to Davidson College, and the first taken on a a doctoral student in mathematics at the University of Washington. Larry is a teacher, and this exudes throughout the book, he never misses an opportunity to educate. Whether this be description and explanation of fun, classic, maths problems that crop up in anecdotes or some of the remarkable connections between mathematics and music. There is also considerable explanation of how Larry actually accomplishes a number of 'everyday' tasks, such as how Braille works and he reads, and writes music.

The book is written for the layman, and as such does not really delve into Larry's own research in any great detail. There are a couple of paragraphs of basic description towards the end but it is more of an autobiography of a blind man growing up in mid 20th century America, pushing boundaries, than that of a world class mathematician.

Throughout, this is a heart-warming and humorous book which I would recommend to all those who enjoy (auto) biographies. Larry's passions and interests are clear -- music, maths and his family --Sean Alvidge, Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications

This is a fascinating book. The author tells, in a very spontaneous way, about his life, both personal and professional. An accomplished and internationally renowned mathematician, Larry W. Baggett tells about vague memories of early childhood, before becoming blind after an accident when he was five years old. He tells about the adaptation to a new life and hs successful struggle to learn how to "see" being totally blind. He recalls the experience of riding school buses, of moving from one class to another during the school days. He mentions some teachers that marked his school years and vividly describes the growth of his pleasure and involvement with music, particularly jazz. He tells about his decision to go to the prestigious Davidson College in North Carolina. Very interesting his comments on the undergraduate mathematics courses, about the good professors he had and his decision for majoring in mathematics. Also about his decision to go to the University of Washington for graduate studies and his experiences as a teaching assistant. Then he tells about the early steps as a research mathematician, which culminated in a doctoral degree granted by the University of Washington after defending a thesis on "A description of topology on the dual spaces of certain locally compact groups." Then he comments on his successful academic career. Each step is described with interesting and critical comments on the trajectory of someone different in an established group of individuals. He tells about some attempts to recover his vision with high technology. Especially his experience with Optacon, an optical-to-tactile converter. All this is mixed with an account of his personal life, from the first marriage, of which he parented two girls, to the divorce and to the successful second marriage. We understand, reading the various chapters, why he dedicates the book to his second wife, using a brief but very strong sentence: To Christy, my light. Particularly moving are the description of his visits to museums and art galleries and how he describes colorful pictures, classic sculptures and architecture. The two final chapters, with very suggestive titles, 12. " The Rennaissance" and 13. "So how'd that all work out for you?", are a vivid narrative of his personal life and feelings. About the Author
Larry Baggett received his PhD from the University of Washington in 1966 and was a faculty member at the University of Colorado, Boulder, from 1966 until 2006. He is the author or co-author of three books and over 60 research papers.

an instance of justified confidence

Baggett is a unusually intelligent person who, as a result of a self-inflicted wound, became blind at age five and learned to cope with the consequences. In large part, his success is the result of his confidence that he could do whatever anyone else could. Such confidence would have led to frustration and eventual failure for anyone less talented than Baggett. In this charmingly written account of his life, Baggett persuades the reader that it is possible for a blind person to live as rich a life as anybody else. Unfortunately, it is possible but not probable.

The book was published by the Mathematical Association of America. It is unconscionable for a non-profit, tax-exempt organization to be charging $50 for a 200 page book published from a pdf file prepared by the author.

A wonderful personal story sitting on top of a metaphorical iceberg

I cannot see how most people might not find this book amazing and inspiring. The other five star reviews of this book relate what one takes away from this book. However, this book also sets the stage for moving beyond typical discussions of disability and personal triumph in mathematics in ways that the author may not have anticipated. The public perception of mathematics is often quite oppressive, based on horrible school experiencesl, and conformity as imposed by standardized tests. In contrast, this books is a tip of an iceberg that indicates the diversity of professional mathematicians. I'm personally amazed by the number of blind world-class mathematicians from the last few centuries that have come to my attention. The public should note the development of Braille and the more recent accomplishments of blind programmers programmers and blind mathematicians who use Latex in ways that should inspire the rest of us. (Baggett has a chapter that touches on this).

If one feels that I'm talking about a "tail end of a distribution", I'd like to point out that I know of, for instance, no deaf mathematician on the level of achievement of several blind mathematicians that come to mind. This should seem ironic since blind students are typically turned away from mathematics at an early age because they "can't do arithmetic on paper". Decades after the myth of the "paperless office", we operate on centuries-old misconceptions about mathematics, and how we learn it, even in the face of exceptional people like Larrry Baggett. I'm so grateful this book has been written and I sincerely hope that the many stereotypes it shatters are dwarfed by questions educators and parents are compelled to consider. Ya got to love it!

When reading Dr. Baggett's book, it seemed as if he was speaking directly to me. I learned a lot about mathematics and music and can see why he was such an outstanding teacher and successful person.

Jennifer E. Boyle, RVT, VTS (ECC) has been an active member of the veterinary community for more than 20 years, teaching and promoting the veterinary profession. Excellent Book

I read this to help my espanol, but loved the story as well. The level is about right for an intermediate Spanish reader. The story is personal but based on historical events, so it is educational as well as heart-warming. I liked it enough to send the English version to my 13 year-old neice and her mother.

Ah made it mah business t'see they didn't have a minute's peace! Oh baby -- did I make THEM mizzuble!!

And that, folks, is the halfway mark of this tome, as Ol' Man 1941 gives way to Baby 1942...

It's non-stop action -- non-stop laughs too! -- as Al Capp puts his creations through the wringer. Abner is drained of his blood, painted bronze and sold as a statue, and (just about) ducks marriage on several occasions. Pappy is a universal punching bag. Salomey almost gets barbecued more than once. All three Yokums are briefly enslaved by Marryin' Sam...

And all that is nothing compared to the final grisly fate met by the great sportsman pig-breeder J. P. Fangsby. Not to mention the unfortunate Sir Cecil Cesspool. ("Cesspools are DEEP!! Cesspools have a certain AIR about them!")

'Dick Tracy' catches flak for violence but Al Capp had every bit as twisted an imagination as Lester Gooch!

So, why do so many people continue to adore this strip over three-quarters of a century after its debut?

First, you have to admire the sheer fecundity of Capp's imagination. Characters continue to pour forth -- Available Jones (and all his extended family), Joe Btfsplk (who literally wanders in during the course of the long saga of Salomey and Boar Scarloff), Moonbeam McSwine -- all without forgetting the likes of Hairless Joe and Lonesome Polecat, or Bessie Bopshire.

Second, the strip is eminently readable because Capp was a satirist in the classic vein of a Mark Twain. Comics are a medium, not a genre. Milton Caniff, probably the only other man who created casts of characters on the scale of Al Capp, wrote a classic bildungsroman (a fancy German term for a coming-of-age novel) in 'The Complete Terry and the Pirates, Vol. 1: 1934-1936' and then followed it up with a picaresque work (a slightly less fancy Spanish term for a likeable rogue who has a series of adventures) in 'Steve Canyon Volume 1: 1947-1948'.

Capp and Caniff were both great cartoonists but having said that this all they had in common. Like Mark Twain, and entirely unlike Caniff's more earnest heroes, there is a subversive edge to Capp.

This book covers work from the beginning of the 1940s. Yet Capp was able to carry off a hint at homosexuality. When Grubbins asks Mammy which couple in Dogpatch "love each other most madly", the percipient Pansy unhesitatingly points at Lonesome Polecat and Hairy Joe. (Unless I'm reading the December 20, 1942 Sunday all wrong?)

But nothing beats the way in which Capp overthrows gender stereotypes. Mammy is both smarter *and* stronger than her husband. And the only person to make a real success in the world outside Dogpatch is Bessie Bopshire. In Capp's world the men are idle and ignorant, or they are crooks. How subversive was that in the context of 1941 and 1942?

(Apart from Li'l Abner himself, the only decent male in Dogpatch seems to be Jedge Goodpants, who appears for all of *one* panel! Even Pappy Yokum is not above trying to cheat the good folks of Creepie Hollow when he gets the chance.)

Nothing and no-one was beyond the reach of Capp's satirical pen and brush. He skewers the empty hypocrisy of Hollywood stars sending out photographs autographed 'Sincerely yours' when neither word is true. He takes Romeo and Juliet to task. Only Margaret Mitchell, author of 'Gone With The Wind', proved a match for Capp. (And had he read his own strip, Capp should have known women are stronger and smarter!)

One of the classic sequences is that of the Flying Avenger, obviously intended as a spoof of the latest comics sensation, Superman, when Li'l Abner's powers are boosted by the Hindu mystic Swami Riva.

I can't prove it but there was a sequel to this tale; in 'Superman' 61, the Last Son of Krypton has his first encounter with kryptonite. The man who fells him is a supposed Hindu mystic, with a sliver of kryptonite in his turban. The name of the crook? Swami Riva.

Carrying on the comics theme, Bruce Canwell's excellent introduction compares Moonbeam to Marvel Comics's Incredible Hulk. Was the comparison inspired by the Sunday strips that ran from December 15, 1940 through January 19, 1941?

The production values are excellent. The dailies are nice and crisp, the Sundays are beautifully colored. And the last page assures fans that there will be a Volume Five to follow, with Fearless Fosdick eagle-eyed on its cover. Can't wait!

Another in the continuing series of old Abner strips and just as much fun as the previous books. I grew up reading about Abner and all the other denizens of Dogpatch and I heartily enjoy re-reading these.

I bought this book mainly for the nostalgia factor but it has caught my eye for entertainment also.
I had forgotten just how involved some of these strips could be. A series that runs on for days to
weeks and always with an entertaining subject. This is something for my kids and grandkids.

Highland Lover

Alana Murray's twin sister is missing. When her brothers set out to find their sibling, Alana does what any good sister would do. She follows them, keeping far enough behind so that they can't send her back home. Unfortunately, she gets separated from them and captured by the Gowans, who want to hold her for ransom.

Gregor MacFingal Cameron has left his family in search of a bride. He thinks he's found one and is on his way home to talk with his father when he is captured by the Gowans. He's been in their prison a few days when they toss a child down with him. Gregor thinks the person sharing his cell is no child, but there's no way to be sure.

Working together, Alana and Gregor break out of the prison and start a quest to find Alana's sister. Along the way, they must keep ahead of the Gowans and battle the growing attraction that they feel for each other.

I very much enjoyed Highland Lover. Ms. Howell weaves a tale of adventure and romance that captures the reader and holds them spellbound. Particularly well done is Alana, who is a strong woman who won't be taken advantage of. This was my first Hannah Howell adventure, and it won't be my last. Lovers of historical fiction will enjoy this book very much.

To date, I have enjoyed reading Ms Howell's Highland Murray and Wherelock series. I will be purchasing additional books in this genre. The only problem I have is reading them too fast.

Hannah Howell does it again... great story!

I am a big fan of Hannah Howell's Highland series and was anxiously waiting for this book to come out... it did not disappoint. I really enjoy the fact that she includes characters from previous books in her novels as it makes you feel like the people and families are more real knowing that they continue on, even after their own stories are told. I like how she switches back and forth from telling the stories from a male character's point of view to a female's. This book is not as steamy as some of the previous books in the series (I thought the 3 Murray daughters' stories were much steamier and the plots slightly more involved/complex). But I still thoroughly enjoyed this latest book by Hannah Howell and cannot wait for the next one coming in December 2006. This is a must read for her usual fans and if you are new to the series and have never read them, I highly encourage you to do so, I know you will fall in love and not be able to put them down until you have gotten through the entire series (like me!).

Very Practical

This is an interesting and very practical book. The language and exercises are to the point, easy to understand without being condescending. The 21 exercises and 5 appendices cover a broad spectrum of subjects. Each section has an annotated bibliography unique to its subject matter, this alone is worth the price of the book. The pictures and diagrams are practical and helpful. This isn't the book for a theory class or general reading, but for a student of public history or archeology intending to or already working in cultural resource management, this is a very handy, concise and practical book. I picked up the book specifically for the material in several chapters, but found them all informative. I would recommend this for anyone in or intending to be in cultural resource management.

Good book, wish Russell would update the text

I took this course with the author as an undergrad and got a fair amount of use out of it. Years later teaching my own archaeology course I dip into some of the concepts presented here. The text and 'case studies' are imaginative and illuminating. I believe the book is either out of print or nearly so. So I say, bring on the second edition and illuminate this interesting subfield of archaeology for a new generation!
