Maureen Anne Jennings has worn the hats of a journalist, copywriter, editor, publishing consultant, media relations manager, book festival director, and Fillmore East staffer. She owns more than 100 hats, not all of them work related. After the obligatory waitressing during college, she squandered a few years behind the bar at various dives in lower Manhattan. Mean Streets

I'm one of those twisted souls who loves to torture herself with tales of lonely hearts, toxic relationships and terminal illness, but who avoids books and movies featuring hard-edged violence, especially involving women. So imagine my surprise when I practically inhaled every tension-laden page of Bartender Wanted!

Upon reflection, it's easy to see why. Author Maureen Anne Jennings has created a narrator of such charm and wit I'd follow her anywhere--including places where very bad things happen. Jennings puts me right there with stubborn, plucky Rose Leary as she fends off creepy advances by men she encounters at her job at a bar called My World, tries to get some sleep in an apartment that suddenly does not feel safe, or decides (stupidly but entertainingly) not to bother police detective Frank Butler with more evidence that her life is in danger. Jennings's vivid descriptions of New York City are often humorous and always evocative. I delighted in this Rose Leary mystery for the same reason I've relished Raymond Chandler's novels, because what Chandler did for 1940s Los Angeles, Maureen Anne Jennings does for 1980s New York. Let her take you there!

Next book, please!

Bartender Wanted is a fun-to-read, well-written crime novel. The main character, Rose Leary, has an edge to her, which I love. The plot was complicated enough that I had to keep track of each character and what part they played in the story, without being confusing. I didn't guess who-done-it until the very end. I definitely recommend Bartender Wanted to anyone who enjoys detective novels. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Authentic Fun

Bartender Wanted is my first purchase, ever, of an Amazon-published book, and I'm happy to say that my daring was rewarded. Within the first two paragraphs we learn there's a killer on the loose in 1980s New York City, and we meet a tough-minded woman who's a bartender-plus-mystery writer as well as an articulate wiseass with a wicked sense of humor. As someone who lived in Manhattan throughout the eighties, I can vouch for the book's authenticity and flavor; as a reader of mystery novels, I can admire the cleverness of the plot and the sympathetic characters. There's danger, fun, genuine surprise, and even an engaging romance.

I can recommend Bartender Wanted wholeheartedly.

A quality book on spiritual help from plants

I originally wanted to give this book three and a half stars, but this is because I was spoiled by the authors other books on gem elixirs and flower essences. Reviewed without bias, it probably deserves 4 stars for placing in my hands many new ways to enhance my own spirituality. The book includes a large number of common and some rarer herbs, with their spiritual, emotional and physical effects. The spiritual uses of herbs are more generalized than those for flowers and gems (from other books), and a person has to read between the lines to get the full meaning of each description. You can use herbs bought from herb shops or health food stores to restore happiness, come closer to god, expand psychic abilities, improve channeling, have stronger character, etc. Don't skip this book if you are having a hard time acquiring or making flower essences as often as you wish - herbs can expand spiritual progress through the long winter months.

This is an absolutely amazing book.

If you love plants, nature, gardening -- but find that you keep thinking there must be something more to it all, you just know there's something more but you can't figure out what it is -- this book might have just what you're looking for. If you read it -- and you *get it* -- you'll never look at your yard, your neighbor's yards, "weeds", any tree, or garden or anything else that grows on planet Earth, through the same pair of eyes, ever again, and you will begin to see how vastly much more the world is, than what you had every before imagined... and know, somehow, deep in your heart, that this was what you'd been missing. This book is a gift to yourself.

Love creates etheric substance

I've had this book for over 20 years. It's a bit tattered. Gurudas associates the energy of plants, crystals the earth with the joy of connection for we humans. Here is just one quote page 11, "Many individuals now on the Earth are coming to know this joy in working with plants, especially through working with herbs. As the spiritual properties of an herb are better known by an individual, that person may decide there is something particularly entrancing and JOYOUS about those properties, about what they are learning from the plant. That is because there is a part of them that is joyous about existence on the Earth. Ultimately, this joyousness is resolved by how the Earth is known more fully. There is always some component of the spiritual side of each herb relating to joyousness of the Earth and acknowledgment of the Earth being."

Of course he goes deeply into specific herbs for the healing processes and what we can gain by merging with those specific characteristics. One of my takes about this book is to learn to interpret the herbs into my own expression of them.

About the Author
Author Baba Hari Dass has been a yogi all his life, and has practiced continual silence since 1952. Born in near Almora, India, he was initiated in the Vairagi Vaishnava order in 1942 by Baba Raghubar Dassji Maharaj. Encouraged by his yoga students, Baba Hari Dass moved to the U.S. in 1971, where he currently lives nine months a year. He spends the other three months at Shri Ram Ashram, an orphanage, school, and medical clinic he started near Haridwar, India.

Textbook for removing suffering

I first came across this book being used as a textbook for a class on yoga philosophy many years ago and was impressed with how I could feel better when I studied it. There is something about contact with truth that gives a sincere student this immediate gratification while also laying the foundation for long term benefit.

I am happy to say that it is still the preferred text for yoga study in both the communities I am involved with. The second book, Sadhana Pada has been recently published and the third book, Vibhuti Pada is in the final stages of edit and will be published soon. Babaji himself is still a presence of silent peace and compassion and thriving at 86 years of age. I am also pleased that all the proceeds from the sale of Babaji's books still goes to the orphanage and it continues to thrive.

I like this book's approach of making the traditional wisdom of yoga available to a western audience without sacrificing the tradition. The text follows the ancient method of teacher student relationship and gives the reader the feeling of having the aphorisims explained by a knowledgeable practitioner. It came about through years of traditional study by Babaji and his students.

The book also has an uplifting effect because of the beautiful artwork on the facing page of each sutra. It seems to call the reader to a higher and nobler interpretation of reality. These reminders of the possibility of an enlightened state of being give us the opportunity to be at peace in the moment, remember a way of life that has been lost to many, and inspire us to live out our days in union with the truth that is ever present yet potentially overlooked in modern life.

A very useful guide to Classical Yoga theory and practice

It is a pleasure to recommend this remarkably lucid and accessible translation of Book One, the abstract and introduction to this famously difficult four-part work.
It is probably not accurate to describe the Sutras as a book, since they are not a collection of essays, or even complete sentences. They are rather a collection of mnemonics meant to provide meaning and order to the experience of Yoga practice under the direction of a qualified Teacher. Passed on verbally, listen and repeat, from Teacher to Student, the Sutras perhaps were never meant to stand alone as an exposition of Yoga.
This translation arises from Baba Hari Das' decades of teaching in just this manner to his many Western students and devotees. As might be expected from a man who has renounced speech and communicates primarily by writing on a small chalk board, his commentaries are concise and to the point. Yet, untranslatable Sanskrit technical terms are not avoided, but clearly explained in philosophical context. Of the several translations of this work that I have studied, Babaji's has proved the most rewarding.
For those of us who may never have the good fortune to work closely in relationship to a loving Guru in the traditional way, this book could be the next best thing. Buy it, study it, and join me in happy anticipation of the release of the remaining books in this series.

Finally discovered something

Finally discovered something that is definite and clear explanation of this yoga text classic. In contrast to what popularly goes under "yoga" normally understood as physical poses, the classical yoga approach is eight-limb system. Samadhi is what is called the internal limb, or yoga proper in comparison to asana, which is a preparatory stage. In that regard, yoga is the mind concentration with several stages and levels of attainment. Mind concentration is actually used in everyday life, however, fast paste changes and frequent distractions break the concentration and often don't provide full benefit. Therefore, more systematic approach is needed, or even required to penetrate what appears to be a difficult dilemma of the meaning of life.

This is a "must-read book" for all Business Leaders, HR Business Partners and Talent Management Professionals.

Want to grow your talent, build a bench and engage your employees but have limited resources? This book is for you! We've all seen the data about the baby boomers retiring- don't get caught as part of the talent shortage. As I read this book, I immediately implemented some of the innovative strategies for developing the talent in my organization. Specifically, I used digital storytelling to develop our interns and help produce digital resources to be used in onboarding efforts. I'm also looking at incorporating volunteering in our strategy for development planning.

Wheel: Triumphant

This nice compilation stands as testament to architectural elegance, engineering ingenuity, perseverance and the triumph of two good people filled with passion and creativity. The London Eye started from the brilliant minds of architects (and husband and wife) David Marks and Julia Barfield. In time, "more than 2,000 other people were involved in the Eye's creation." This book takes you from two to 2,000. Like the Eye itself, it's a heck of a ride.

It's standard now to be a great fan of the Eye. But the book skillfully catalogs a different time: that of the beginnings when skepticism and, in some cases, outright hostility threatened to kill the idea in its infancy. It took a couple of well-placed supporters in the press (writer Mira Bar-Hillel and editor Stewart Steven of the Evening Standard) and business (CEO Bob Ayling of British Airways) to make the idea fly.

Still, there was a time when all the smart money and the bandwagon was lined up behind the lamentable Millennium Dome. The difference between the two: behind the Eye was, according to Bob Ayling, "a team that was committed to achieving something...and if something needed to be done we got it done. We took decisions very quickly and we put the financial structure in place to make it succeed. The Dome, on the other hand, was a political project that become a politicised project." In short, doomed for failure.

By the time of the Eye's assembling in the Thames and its hoisting - a technical feat of majesty and a signature event in itself - the world had top-sided. It was Wheel: triumphant. Its outline has become "shorthand for London." The Dome has met a much different history.

Beyond the story the book tells, it's a wonderful picture book. It mixes high-quality color and black & white plates with original sketches and reprints of significant London front pages capturing key events,

A great book for anyone with a serious interest in the Eye

This is not a book for the casual reader, or as just a souvenir of a visit to the London Eye. This is an in-depth book (TRULY in-depth) that takes you right through all the history, planning, engineering, construction, roadblocks, and eventual realization of this London icon. Photos are just fantastic. You'd have to be a true fan of the Eye (or an engineer or someone in construction) to really read this book from cover to cover. For the rest of us, the book is worth the price for the pictures alone.

It tells the whole story of the eye from the spark that created the idea, through the benchmarks and tribulations, to the sureal reflection on how it could have gone differently. Edith Cherry provides a very comprehensive overview of a subject that tends to be overlooked or neglected by many individuals in the architectural field. This is a must read for every architectural office regardless of office size or scale of work. Understanding and implementing Programming is an essential component in the architectural process that can not be overlooked.

In July 2002, UIA agreed to promote their criteria on Architectural Education, worldwide. Among various criteria, we can clearly find necessity of teaching the architectural programming in school. With understanding this situation, I can recommend this as the BEST TEXT BOOK among others in this field,

Coven of The Catta Elders and Unique Ritual Practices

In this book , author Gary Lee Hoke does all of us in the Craft a service by sharing with us the history and teachings of the Coven of The Catta Tradition whose lineage traces back to the late Sybil Leek. All too often some modern books pertaining to Craft history come across as generic or vague in their approach , but in this book and account of the Coven of The Catta it is easy to get a feel for the depth and richness of the Tradition. Also in this book the author paints an in depth portrait of the late Dr. Frederick Santee , an initiate of Sybil Leek and one of the founders of the Coven. We come to see him as a man , a country doctor , an intellectual and scholar and as a High Priest. All of which makes for a fitting tribute to a fascinating man still spoken of and remembered in his hometown of Wapwallopen , Pa. A book that I would highly recommended to everyone , regardless of Tradition , of especial interest to all of us who remember reading Sybil Leeks early books and wishing we could learn more about her legacy

Pretty easy to understand!

This was a pretty easy-to-follow and understand textbook. Sometimes, though, the language is a little too basic, and makes the reader feel as if he were a child. Overall, the book was written clearly and made learning statistics a lot more bearable.

Ok for undergraduate statistics course, but could be better.

Pros:
Includes a good amount of the theory behind the statistics
Good choice of statistical symbols, for the most part.
Easy to read and understand.
Cons:
Some chapters really dumb things down too much, especially in the first handful of chapters.
There are some important typos (aside from those on the list of known errors).
I think the use of names like Bubbles and Foofy in the sample problems is a bit cheesy.
Students found the homework problems to be too difficult to interpret and often approached the problems incorrectly.
Expensive (but aren't they all)...

Much better than I expected

I ordered the ebook version of this textbook, as I didn't need a hard copy. I found that the ebook version was very user friendly (opened via kindle app on IPhone). It was easy to scan through when searching for something. It was also convenient when looking things up by topic. In no way did the ebook version hold me back.

The text within the book was also very helpful for me within my statistics class. I was retaking the course, since I failed the first time. The book I had in the course before had no examples, and very little information to help. I was concerned that this book would be the same. This textbook is great though. It contains multiple examples. One thing that could possibly be a set back is the terminology. The definitions were extremely technical, making it difficult to put them in real world terms. Luckily, I had taken the course before, so it wasn't a foreign concept to me. However, if you are new to this topic, it may be hard to correlate to terms that you are familiar with. One benefit is that the technical terms that the book utilizes are very similar to what your professors will anticipate within your work.

Beautiful and heartwarming

My grandmother had this book. When she died, I couldn't find it in her house and became so convinced that I had to have it as a memory of my childhood that I bought a copy, way back when used copies cost only $70. Not only is the artwork richly beautiful, the story itself is simple and heartwarming. I'm with the reader who says this book should go into reprint. Yes, it IS a crime that it cost so much to get your hands on it. It is one of the most beautiful children's books there is, and whoever owns the rights to it should make a point to get it to a publishing house a.s.a.p.

My First (and best) Book

I was just listening to this week's edition of "To The Best of Our Knowlege" about libraries and books. I was reminded that Dr. Goat was the first book I could read by myself, and I would read it every night to my little brother. I went to Amazon to purchase a copy for my friend's baby, and was shocked and dismayed that it is no longer in print. It's a beautiful book, and a lovely story. Dr. Goat takes care of all his animal patients every day. One day, Dr. Goat is sick and all the animals come to take care of him. It's a truly touching story of how we should be treating each other, and what community is all about. (I'm feeling very sentimental right now, thinking of this book I read nearly 50 years ago. How many books have touched you that way?)

My Uncle illustrated Dr. Goat

My favorite of his illustrated childrens books. He illustrated it for Georgianna in N.Y.C. in '49. We have lots of the original artwork for it and I have a copy of it sitting on my desk in my office at work.
Glad to hear other people enjoyed it so much. Wish i could get it reprinted.
