Jack Wang, CCIE #32450, is a principle network consultant and founder of Speak Network Solutions. He has been designing and implementing enterprise and large-scale service provider networks as well as teaching and blogging about advanced technologies. His current focus includes Software-Define Networking (SDN), data centers, Amazon AWS cloud integration, wireless, WAN architectures and design. Jack holds B.S. in Engineering and M.S. in Computer Science.

Jack’s passion for network technologies and solutions has played a dominant role in his 20 years of industry experience. He prides himself in his knowledge sharing abilities, evident in the fact that he has mentored many successful engineers, as well as having designed and delivered some network infrastructures around the globe.

Great way to get started with VIRL.

I have been using Cisco's VIRL for several months now and struggled through getting through many of the features working that the author lays out in clear instructions in this book. As I was working through issues, I had to sift through forum posts and figure out much of it through trial and error that took quite a bit of time to get through. Much of the time that I had intended to be spending studying for certifications and working through some topologies to test out, was instead spent learning this platform. I wish I had this as a resource when I was first starting out.

The book starts out simple and gradually moves into more advanced subjects and would work well as both a reference and a "getting started" guide. Frankly, this book should be provided by Cisco as part of the subscription to VIRL. Perhaps Cisco should hire him to write guides like this on their behalf. There was quite a bit that could be covered, and I was glad to see that the book wasn't fluffed up with general 'intro to networking' concepts, but rather with actual information on VIRL itself. The examples and descriptions provided are more of a way to demonstrate features of VIRL rather than trying to teach networking concepts. Exactly what it should be.

I eventually found Jack's site as I was working through an issue to a posting he had about an issue I was having and I signed up to be notified of his book when it came out. I was provided an advance copy to be ready to write a review when it was released, unsure if I would actually buy it for myself. After reading the book, I went ahead and bought it since he did a great job in putting this together. So... Yes, I was provided an advance copy of the book, but I bought it anyway when it was released. My review is genuine. Well done Jack.

I would encourage the author to make regular updates to the book to people that buy it as the platform changes. VIRL is constantly changing both in features and requirements and parts of this book may be quickly outdate without some updates.

I highly recommend VIRL and this book

I've used VIRL since the first version was released. Each time I install it, I find myself watching YouTube videos and/or printing out online documentation to walk me through all of the installation steps. However, in the future, I'll be referencing "The VIRL Book." It provides an extraordinary level of detail about various types of VIRL installations (e.g. on macOS with VMware Fusion Pro, using VMware vSphere ESXi, VMware Workstation Pro, VMware Player, and even in the cloud). It shows you how to interconnect your VIRL topology with a physical topology and perform packet captures. Additionally, the book presents several topologies you can create and experiment with. I highly recommend VIRL and this book.

The lack of depth on VIRL networking was just very dissapointing since this is what Cisco hasn't done a good job of documenting

I had high hopes for this book based on the reviews, however it did not provide much beyond instructions for installing and using basic features of VIRL. It was organized and well written but just about everything that is in this book can be found in the documentation and published videos or through a few hours of trial and error. I had specifically hoped the author would discuss how to use the various network features to create advanced simulations and interact with physical equipment using the different types of VIRL interface types but it was sorely lacking in this department. The lack of depth on VIRL networking was just very dissapointing since this is what Cisco hasn't done a good job of documenting. It was just too high level and basic for me to justify the cost of this book.

I am extremely angry with the lie she tells about how she gleaned this information and do not recommend anyone else give her any

This is bulls***. None of this was collected from secret emails or private conversations. It's a collection of quotes from various interviews over the past few years. There was not a single thing in this book I didn't myself already know and read. I can even tell which articles and interviews she took each statement from. I am a huge fan of his and have watched every panel and read every interview. She misrepresented this book and how she acquired the information she put in it. I am extremely angry with the lie she tells about how she gleaned this information and do not recommend anyone else give her any money for something they can google for free.

Lots of content - but very wordy and reader unfriendly

I had adopted this book to teach Distributed Systems to a senior level undergrad class. I think I may have made a mistake, not knowing before hand how hard it would be for me to read this book (despite having some background in distributed systems). The students constantly complained of it being too "Wordy" and "vague". Few generic figures and mostly all text that seemed to be a rehash of several IEEE/ACM papers without giving sufficient examples or explanation. Some times, the authors did indeed explain some concepts with examples. At other times, they just left the concepts in vague mathematical notation or arcane definitions expecting the readers to make sense of it. While the english is grammatically correct, it is written in such a stuffy academic style that I found myself having to read most paragraphs twice or thrice before I could figure out what the author was trying to say. At times, I was thinking the authors should have been lawyers instead. (If the authors are reading this .. please consider the maxim: A picture is indeed worth a thousand words). A side note: I am not averse to reading academic papers. I do that all day long. But I just don't think a textbook should be written in that style.

On the pro side: This book has lots of content related to distributed systems - and that was one of the reasons I adopted it. However, what's the point if that content is unreadable? My recommendation would be other books such as Tanenbaums Distributed Systems book (it has lesser content, but more readable and suited for undergraduate level).

I give it high marks for the good content, but very low marks for the style of narration and presentation.

- shallow coverage of too many topics

- some key learning points are left to the student in an intro book

- poor formatting and organization

= an intro book that doesn't build enough on the foundations and tries to cover too much in this growing field

It's alright...

The best review I can give for this book is this: it's OK.

It's not terribly thorough, but it's easy to read. You're going to need some supplementary publications in order to fill in the gaps it leaves or just to answer the questions you will probably have popping up in your head.

Discovering ancient shipwrecks hasn’t been a novelty for thousands of years, but when artifacts were salvaged from a Roman shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera in 1900, the discovery of one set off one of the great mysteries of antiquity.

When sponge divers investigated the shipwreck, they found the kind of items often associated with such discoveries, including marble statues, pottery, jewelry, and coins, but they also discovered a strange object, the likes of which nobody had ever seen before. Initially assumed to be pieces of rock, it turned out that the item, soon to be dubbed the Antikythera mechanism, consisted of dozens of pieces, many of which had gears. In fact, while scholars quickly deduced that it had an astronomical purpose, many believed the mechanism was too advanced to actually date back to antiquity.

As it turned out, of course, the Antikythera mechanism did date back to the 1st or 2nd century BCE, and as scholars began to more fully comprehend its abilities, fascination over the device grew. In conjunction with the determination that the mechanism was an analog computer of sorts that could predict astronomical phenomena like the positions of stars and eclipses, conjecture over the origins of the device led to theories over what the Romans were going to do with it, and whether the device was created by the Greek genius Archimedes himself. To this day, debate continues over whether there were predecessors to the model, where the astronomical observations that went into creating the model were taken, and whether the ultimate origins of the device might even be Babylonian.

What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published? 1,313 among free books.

Questions that might come to mind are: Will this teach me anything new that I could not easily glean from surfing the web? The operative word is easily. Yes, the information provided in Charles River Editors book regarding the Antikythera Mechanism will help you easily understand what it is and why its find is so significant.

Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first? Yes.

Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? There are a few, but none of them are particularly significant. One example would be in which the word ‘where’ was written instead of the correct word, ‘were.’

Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read? This is a fascinating, quick read. I say fascinating, because, while it took nearly 100 years to determine the purpose of this mechanism which was lost to the world some 2,000 or so years ago, the discovered function proves that ancient Greeks were stunningly brilliant and capable of unbelievable mathematics.

Reading Antikythera Mechanism you will learn of the Metonic Cycle, the Callippic Cycle and the Saros Cycle that all were trackable using this analog computer. Probably, one finds more cause for wonder with this device, this computer, than with any creation by IBM, Apple or Microsoft.

What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? This is written in plain English with no hyperbole, no foul language, and no joking around, but it also is not stiff or boring or dry in any way shape or form.

My biggest pleasure or disappointment was? I was stunned to learn that something I had, years ago when I was far too naïve to understand the challenges involved by such a desire, wanted to calculate with some precision a calendar of cycles based on the time periods involved in the planets and certain star formations to any given relative point. I now know that somebody, a couple thousand years ago, worked out the equation for me, including development of a device to provide me a visual reference point.

Such a device, I hasten to add, was imagined by the great Isaac Asimov in his series of the Foundation.

The brief excerpt that follows demonstarates the style of writing in The Antikythera Mechanism.

EXCERPT

The first thing that Wright did was advance on Price’s overall gear count, adding 4 gearwheels to create a total of 31, including one in Fragment C that he eventually identified as part of a Moon phase display. In a leap of logic not altogether dissimilar to Price, he created and displayed the phases of the moon by the rotation of a half black and half silvered ball, realized by the differential rotation of the sidereal cycle of the moon and the sun's yearly cycle. He also obtained more accurate tooth counts (more in agreement with Price’s original count) which facilitated a new gearing scheme, allowing him to concur at least with Price's theory that the upper back dial had been intended to display the Metonic cycle, with divisions over a five-turn scale indicating 235 lunar months (19 years, or 235 Synodic Months).

Then, measuring the dials at the back, Wright was struck by an epiphany. He realized that the main back dials were not in fact concentric circles at all, but a single spiral linking the two dials, with the upper a five-turn spiral, and by measuring the marks on it, he was able to calculate that each revolution of the pointer represented 47 divisions, making 235 in all. From this, he determined that the upper spiral must have displayed the 235 months of the Metonic 19-year cycle, as calculated by the gear train under the front dial. He also observed that fragmentary inscriptions on the subsidiary dial suggested that the pointer showed a count of four cycles of the 19-year period, equal to the 76-year Callippic cycle.[ 31] In further tentative leaps of faith and logic, he added that the lower back dial counted Draconic, or lunar months, and could perhaps have been used for eclipse prediction.

All of this was singularly brilliant, and the opus of a man without much in the way of academic credentials, reinforced with enormous gumption and self-belief. Echoing some of the lapses that he attributed to Derek Price, however, when he was unable to reconcile all of the known gears into a single coherent mechanism, he advanced the theory that the mechanism had been altered, or modified in some way, with some astronomical functions removed and others added. He had, after all, used various items of second hand detritus lying around his own workshop to build the replica, so it made sense that an ancient craftsman would have done likewise to build the original. In general, however, the brilliance of his work is unassailable, with perhaps his greatest stroke of genius being the incorporation of an epicyclic pin and slot engagement gear to simulate the elliptical anomaly in the angular velocity of the moon.[
