About the Author
A former monthly columnist for Astronomy magazine, Richard J. Bartlett has had a passion for the stars since the age of six.

His first website, StarLore, was featured in Sky & Telescope magazine in early 2001. Following that success, he freelanced for Astronomy, reviewing astronomical websites and software in his monthly Webweaver Picks column.

Additionally, he has moderated on the UniverseToday forums, operated his own astronomical messageboard and still manages his own space news website, AstroNews. (http://astronewsus.wordpress.com/)

His latest blog, The Astronomical Year, highlights current astronomical events on an almost daily basis. (http://theastronomicalyear.wordpress.com/)

Now living in the suburbs of Los Angeles, he still stops to stare at the sometimes smoggy night sky through the city's light-pollution.

Nice introduction to the night sky
By Kent Fuka
Does a fine job of orienting new stargazers to the highlights of the constellations, with a basic list of observing targets for naked eye, binoculars, and small telescopes. Nice overview of the history of the constellations and the planets. It would benefit from a few more images or sketches of some of the observing targets it describes, eg some Messier objects. Overall recommended!

Already a #1 international bestseller, this tautly written and gripping psychological thriller forces a police inspector to reluctantly return to her hometown in Basque Country—a place engulfed in mythology and superstition—to solve a series of eerie murders.

When the naked body of a teenage girl is found on a riverbank in Basque Country, Spain, homicide inspector Amaia Salazar must return to the hometown she always sought to escape. A dark secret from Amaia’s past plagues her with nightmares, and as her investigation deepens, the old pagan beliefs of the community threaten to derail her astute detective work. The lines between mythology and reality begin to blur, and Amaia must discover whether the crimes are the work of a ritualistic killer or of a mythical creature known as the Basajaun, the Invisible Guardian.

Torn between the rational procedures of her job and the local superstitions of a region shaped by the Spanish Inquisition, Amaia fights against the demons of her past in order to track down a killer on the run.

Imagine, at a terrifyingly aggressive rate, everything you regularly use is being equipped with computer technology. Think about your phone, cameras, cars-everything-being automated and programmed by people who in their rush to accept the many benefits of the silicon chip, have abdicated their responsibility to make these products easy to use. The Inmates Are Running the Asylum argues that the business executives who make the decisions to develop these products are not the ones in control of the technology used to create them. Insightful and entertaining, The Inmates Are Running the Asylum uses the author's experiences in corporate America to illustrate how talented people continuously design bad software-based products and why we need technology to work the way average people think. Somewhere out there is a happy medium that makes these types of products both user and bottom-line friendly; this book discusses why we need to quickly find that medium.

Amazon.com Review
The recurring metaphor in The Inmates are Running the Asylum is that of the dancing bear--the circus bear that shuffles clumsily for the amusement of the audience. Such bears, says author Alan Cooper, don't dance well, as everyone at the circus can see. What amazes the crowd is that the bear dances at all. Cooper argues that technology (videocassette recorders, car alarms, most software applications for personal computers) consists largely of dancing bears--pieces that work, but not at all well. He goes on to say that this is more often than not the fault of poorly designed user interfaces, and he makes a good argument that way too many devices (perhaps as a result of the designers' subconscious wish to bully the people who tormented them as children) ask too much of their users. Too many systems (like the famous unprogrammable VCR) make their users feel stupid when they can't get the job done.

Cooper, who designed Visual Basic (the programming environment Microsoft promotes for the purpose of creating good user interfaces), indulges in too much name-dropping and self-congratulation (Cooper attributes the quote, "How did you do that?" to Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, upon looking at one of Cooper's creations)--but this appears to be de rigueur in books about the software industry. But those asides are minor. More valuable is the discourse about software design and implementation ("[O]bject orientation divides the 1000-brick tower into 10 100-brick towers."). Read this book for an idea of what's wrong with UI design. --David Wall

Topics covered: User interfaces--good ones and bad ones--and where they come from. Also, how to improve the ones you create.

About the Author

As a software inventor in the mid-70s, Alan Cooper got it into his head that there must be a better approach to software construction. This new approach would free users from annoying, difficult and inappropriate software behavior by applying a design and engineering process that focuses on the user first and silicon second. Using this process, engineering teams could build better products faster by doing it right the first time.

His determination paid off. In 1990 he founded Cooper, a technology product design firm. Today, Cooper's innovative approach to software design is recognized as an industry standard. Over a decade after Cooper opened its doors for business, the San Francisco firm has provided innovative, user-focused solutions for companies such as Abbott Laboratories, Align Technologies, Discover Financial Services, Dolby, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Fujitsu Softek, Hewlett Packard, Informatica, IBM, Logitech, Merck-Medco, Microsoft, Overture, SAP, SHS Healthcare, Sony, Sun Microsystems, the Toro Company, Varian and VISA. The Cooper team offers training courses for the Goal-Directed® interaction design tools they have invented and perfected over the years, including the revolutionary technique for modeling and simulating users called personas, first introduced to the public in 1999 via the first edition of The Inmates.

In 1994, Bill Gates presented Alan with a Windows Pioneer Award for his invention of the visual programming concept behind Visual Basic, and in 1998 Alan received the prestigious Software Visionary Award from the Software Developer's Forum. Alan introduced a taxonomy for software design in 1995 with his best-selling first book, About Face: The Essentials of User Interface Design. Alan and co-author Robert Reimann published a significantly revised edition, About Face: The Essentials of Interaction Design, in 2003.

Alan's wife, Susan Cooper, is President and CEO of Cooper. They have two teenage sons, Scott and Marty, neither of whom is a nerd. In addition to software design, Alan is passionate about general aviation, urban planning, architecture, motor scooters, cooking, model trains and disc golf, among other things. Useful ideas but infuriatingly arrogant
By Ellen Isaacs
The Inmates are Running the Asylum makes the business case for interaction designers playing a central role in the development of technology products. It starts by providing examples of technology that is difficult, frustrating, humiliating, and even dangerous to use. Cooper argues that, although people have gotten used to being humiliated by technology, it doesn't have to be this way. His claim is that most technology, especially software, is designed by engineers who think differently than non-technical people: they enjoy being challenged by difficult problems and they are trained to think in terms of "edge cases" rather than on the common case. Thus when engineers design software, they tend to create products with far too many neat features that clutter the interface and make it difficult to do the simpler tasks. In the second part of the book, Cooper describes an approach that he and his design firm uses to simplify products and keep them focused on the users' needs, eliminating or hiding more complex features that few people use. He gives some specific and compelling examples of how they took a different approach to an interesting design problem and keep the product simple while still being powerful. He makes the case that you can grab a market with powerful, feature-rich, complex software that is frustrating to use, but you don't build customer loyalty that way; as soon as a well-designed version of that product comes along, your customers will defect. If you delight the user with your products, on the other hand, you will engender deep loyalty that will help see you through some poor business decisions. His primary example of this is the fanatical loyalty that Apple garners from its users, compared with the rage that Windows users feel toward Microsoft. Apple has weathered some horrendous business decisions and still survives, whereas Microsoft users are more than happy to defect when a better product comes along, and in fact revel in the defection.
I also don't think he makes it clear enough that he's not proposing doing *fewer* features to make products simpler and easier to use, he's talking about doing *different* features. For example, he argues that software should not be so lazy; it should stop making the user do work that the computer is better suited to doing (e.g. remembering where they put files), and it should stop making users go through the same steps over and over again, as if it were the first time they had ever met this user. He argues that "Do you really mean it?" popups are evil (and I couldn't agree more - as most of my coworkers know), and instead it should be easy to undo anything, so it's not so catastrophic to do something you didn't meant to do. I agree with all that, but of course building a reasonable "undo" mechanism is a very complex feature. To cure the "How could you possibly want to quit my ever-so-important application?" popup syndrome, it would be much better to make the software very fast to start up, and to have it come back in exactly the state you left it in, so that quitting when you didn't mean to is not a problem. All of this is well worth doing, but it is lots of engineering work; it's another feature. I'm all for shifting engineer resources to these features instead of the "but somebody *might* want to do this obscure thing" features, but it should be clear that this is not doing fewer features, it's doing different ones, ones that help smooth the user's interaction with the software. Cooper seems to imply that engineers are so lazy that they don't want to do these features, but most engineers work very hard and care about their product. The key is to make it clear why doing this feature right will make such a big difference to the product. My experience has been that the more you understand the work involved in doing a feature, the better you can work with engineers. Not only can you better trade off engineering effort for user benefit, but engineers respect you for understanding what you're asking.
Having said all that, I can't deny that I finished this book with some very specific ideas about improving my own designs, and a renewed sense of the importance of what I do. I just wish Cooper could have articulated the case without putting interaction designers "on a throne."

Great Ideas, Not Always Well Presented
By Brian Curtis
The culture of software development is changing, but grudgingly. The short-sighted notion "It's better to be first with something bad than second with something perfect" has been discredited after too long a reign as the New Paradigm of the Information Age ("It's brilliant because it's counter-intuitive!"), and instead has been exposed for what it is: bad business and a lousy way to treat customers. Alan Cooper's book helps make sense of things as software developers, after decades of coding for each other, are forced to begin acknowledging the cold and strange outside world of Real Life Users.
Cooper's writing is generally clear and easy to follow. He documents his points well and uses numerous true-to-life examples to illustrate the concepts. The ATM analysis, for example, is both effective and memorabl: Why DOES the ATM list account types you don't have, permitting an invalid selection? Why can't you return to a previous screen to correct mistakes, instead of starting over from scratch? Why doesn't the system give you an error message that helps you understand the problem, rather than "Unable to complete transaction"? No one even bothers to ask these questions, Cooper points out, because we've accepted the default structure of ATM screens--which were created for the convenience of coders and system engineers, rather than users.
Cooper also performs a valuable service in demolishing that old standby programmers' excuse: "We don't call any of the shots-it's all management's fault!" Bull. Half the managers in the computer industry are former coders themselves (and laboring under an outmoded and faulty mental model of how software development must occur, by the way). The other half are so non-technical that they're at the mercy of the coders, who are free to decide which features are most important, which will take too long, and ultimately, which will or won't make the cut for the next release. Coders ARE driving this bus, if occasionally from the back seat, and they need to take responsibility for what they produce-and be humble enough to admit that an indispensable part of the development process (interface/interaction design) is beyond their abilities.
That said, Cooper's writing style itself is less than perfect. He presents many compelling case histories, but at times he seems to lean too heavily on insider stories, as if showing off his contacts and expertise in the industry. And, of course, Cooper is far too much in love with his "dancing bear" metaphor; long before you've reached the halfway point, you'll be muttering, "One page...just ONE page without a `dancing bearware' reference, PLEASE! That's all I ask!"
But the messages and lessons in this book are too important to ignore. As Cooper tries to remind us, it is everyday users-not the power users, not even the "computer literate"-who are the core audience. They're the ones you have to design for: a successful interaction design, rather than a burgeoning list of clever features, is what will determine your product's success or failure.

Extremely poor
By E. PEPKE
I have been passionately interested in usability issues and ways to improve them for a quarter century. I read all that I can on the subject to gain insight into how to make things better. This book, however, fails miserably.
It is about 50% personal exorcism, projected onto others, of his own former self. It is about 50% advertisement for the kind of consultant he now stylizes himself as. It is 100% the kind of book on usability you would expect the "Father of Visual Basic" to produce.
There is some good information in this book, which would normally merit a rating of two or three stars. However, by its polemical tone, it diverts attention away from really good books by such authors as Donald Norman and Jef Raskin, and, for that matter, Cooper's own _About Face_, which is quite good.
If you hate unusable products and are looking for nice, easy scapegoats to be angry about, this will be an enjoyable read. If, however, you are interested in the actual reasons that products are poorly usable or are interested in how to improve the world, this book is worse than useless.
One histrionic account describes how he cannot buy a VCR that lets him record shows by setting time with a knob. This would be excusable except for the fact that, the year this book was published, a remote control was being sold that did exactly that, and it recieved saturation advertising on television. The problem is that nobody bought it. Demand was so poor that it isn't made any more, and no sales staff I have spoken with has remembered anyone ever asking for such a device.
Yes, there are reasons that devices are not very usable, but in order to understand them one has to look beyond the simple, adversarial, supply-side approach that Cooper and the majority of usability gurus seem to be stuck in. Unfortunately, the field has become so dominated by this kind of ressentiment thinking, that it is unlikely that the real issues can even be published, let alone addressed.
Failing that, however, there are still books that can inspire or help build a more usable world. _Asylum_ is simply not one of them, that's all.

The Great Ordeal: The Aspect-Emperor: Book Three (The Aspect-Emperor Trilogy), by R. Scott Bakker

The much-anticipated third installment of R. Scott Bakker’s acclaimed series, The Aspect-Emperor

Praised by fans and critics worldwide, R. Scott Bakker has become one of the most celebrated voices in fantasy literature. With The Great Ordeal, Bakker presents the long-anticipated third volume of The Aspect-Emperor, a series that stands with the finest in the genre for its grandiose scope, rich detail, and thrilling story.

As Fanim war-drums beat just outside the city, the Empress Anasurimbor Esmenet searches frantically throughout the palace for her missing son Kelmomas. Meanwhile and many miles away, Esmenet’s husband’s Great Ordeal continues its epic march further north. But in light of dwindling supplies, the Aspect-Emperor’s decision to allow his men to consume the flesh of fallen Sranc could have consequences even He couldn’t have foreseen. And, deep in Ishuäl, the wizard Achamian grapples with his fear that his unspeakably long journey might be ending in emptiness, no closer to the truth than when he set out.

The Aspect-Emperor series follows Bakker’s Prince of Nothing saga, returning to the same world twenty years later. The Great Ordeal follows The Judging Eye and The White-Luck Warrior, and delivers the first half of the conclusion to this epic story. Returning to Bakker’s richly imagined universe of myth, violence, and sorcery, The Aspect-Emperor continues to set the bar for the fantasy genre, reaching new heights of intricacy and meaning.

Review
“Terrifying and astonishing.  Here is world-building on the grand scale it should achieve.  Here are emotions and stakes driven to a pitch that will squeeze every reader breathless.” (Ian C. Esslemont, author of Dancer's Lament)

“With The Great Ordeal, the penultimate book in The Aspect-Emperor series, Bakker begins to betray the final mysteries of his cosmos, feeding and goading readers more than in any of the preceding novels… Page for page, this volume was a most haunting pleasure to read.” (Bakkerfans)

“The worldbuilding is once again top notch. Bakker’s richly detailed narrative creates an imagery that virtually leaps off the page. The Middle Eastern setting of the western Three Seas remains a welcome change from the usual generic medieval environments found in most fantasy sagas… Indeed, Bakker’s creations remain head and shoulder above all other SFF settings on the market today… A compelling read that sets the stage for everything Bakker fans have been hoping for for so many years!” (Pat’s Fantasy Hotlist)

“The Great Ordeal is a stunning addition to the series, go and buy it as soon as it is available. Seethes with intelligence, action and revelation and is a worthwhile continuation of the smartest epic fantasy of our generation.” (The Wertzone)

without parallel
By Z. Morris
This series and the preceding trilogy ( The Darkness that Comes Before: The Prince of Nothing, Book One (The Prince of Nothing) (The Prince of Nothing Series 1) ) are my favorite stories I've ever read. I'm 46 and grew up reading Herbert, Tolkien, etc.. whom I love, but my reading of fantasy trailed off as I got older. Very few contemporary stories even come close to that league. Scott Bakker's stories have exceeded those greats (especially for adult readers). Take a moment to let that sink in. I do not make that statement lightly. And they stand far above any contemporary authors which which I am familiar (including everyone's favorite benchmark, R.R. Martin; who's stories are fun but not nearly as ambitious as Bakker, IMHO.

Fascinating ideas and characters, an exciting plot and tight, well-crafted prose that has continued to improve with every book. Buy it. It has almost nothing in common with other books in this sales silo (a good thing in my opinion). This level of work should be promoted and rewarded.

NO SPOILERS REVIEW
By Ivan
I have been a huge fan of The Second Apocalypse series right from the first book The Darkness That Comes Before. There is really nothing in any modern fantasy/sci-fi genre that even comes close to Baker's philosophical and artistic style. I have devoured the three Prince of Nothing and the two Aspect-Emperor books in 3 months in 2013 and the wait of the Great Ordeal has been quite long to say the least. At one point, I was worried that the last two books would never see the light of day because of all of Scott’s publisher issues.

Of course the second I heard that the Great Ordeal finally had a publication date, I pre-ordered both the Kindle and Audible versions. Now that I had a chance to listen to/read The Great Ordeal, the question is was the wait worth it? I say absolutely!

Baker picks up right where he left off. Everything that made me like this series so much is still here in copious amounts. You will find plenty of philosophical musings about the make-up of morality, about the nature of a god/supreme being, about the foibles of human nature, about the essence of faith, about cause and effect, and many, many other themes.

Baker’s style is still very much true to form. He strikes a perfect balance between being artistic and almost mystical, without losing the reader or making the prose unnecessarily hard to understand. I find this to be his greatest strength as a writer, the only other person to accomplish this successfully is Dostoyevsky. As a matter of fact, both Baker’s and Dostoyevsky’s styles are rather similar in a lot of ways. Perhaps it’s no wonder they are two of my favorite fictions writers. And yes, I did just compare a world famous 19th century Russian novelist with a contemporary Canadian sci-fi writer, such is the interesting world of literature.

Since I promised no spoilers, I will not comment very much on the story. I just want to assure readers that every major plot line and character gets plenty of air time. The main plot as a whole also moves along quite nicely. While I can definitely see how Baker is setting up the pieces for the conclusion, I totally cannot even begin to guess how all this will come together at the end.

In this installment, we also get a much better exposition of the Dûnyain as well as the Nonmen. These sections were probably my favorite ones. A lot of these scenes are largely dialogue driven, but they are so interesting and well done that I was completely engrossed and almost transfixed while reading them.

My only quibble is that there are parts of this book that can be probably be slimmed down a bit. There were places where I felt like things dragged a little bit, particularly on Esmenet’s chapters. Overall, not a big deal, it’s probably no more than 5% of the book that I would cut.

In conclusion, this an absolutely great book and completely true to the essence of the series. Scott does not miss a beat despite the actual “great ordeal” involved in getting this published. If you are a fan of the series, have waited a long time, and are on the fence as to whether you want to get back into this, my wholehearted recommendation is to get this book!

Fantasy as it should be
By Evan
I grew up reading fantasy and the classics (Tolstoy, Dickens, Dostoyevsky, Austin, etc). As I read more of the classics, the terrible prose and character development of most fantasy became intolerable and I drifted away from the genre. For many years I read none- Bakker's series is one of those that brought me back into the fold. His combination of absolutely all encompassing world building, an epic plotline, navel gazing character introspection, philosophical musings, and horrific violence is, for me, what fantasy should be. He writing is, of course, a big notch below that of the classic authors but for fantasy his wordy, almost voluptuous, prose is a dream come true. He veers into grandiloquence occasionally but I'll forgive him for that. He also has a handful of words he LOVES and overuses: marmoreal, cyclopean, legion...to name a few. However, he creates real characters and is able to delineate personalities (a rarity for fantasy, which tends to survive on cardboard cutouts). His scene in Thousandfold Thought when Achamian watches Esmenet wash clothes in the river is, along with Gollum's near recanting outside of Cirith Ungol in LOTR, one of the most tragic things I've read in fantasy. His "bad guys" are exactly that: horrible and damned with no chance at redemption. His battle scenes are breathless and visceral. His entire world has such a substantive feel, an distinct atmosphere unlike any other I've read. From the characters, to the religions, to the regions, to the magic schools...everything is distinct and colorful. The latest book continues the tradition of excellence. The tragedy of the non-men and their fall from grace to madness is especially well captured and unlike anything I've read in fantasy. Bakker's idea that their unnatural immortality is incompatible with their god given mortality is a subtle horror that plays out very well across multiple books: what else could be more awful than the loss of self, as memory, which binds our past to our present, slowly erodes across the millenia? The ways he has developed for the non-men to cope are brilliant and pathetic as their attempts to recapture what they have lost results in the degradation and collapse of a once magnificent race. His books are ones I wait for and actually buy in hardcover form as soon as available. The only other fantasy authors receiving similar treatment from me are Martin and Rothfuss.

About the Author
It was 1988 when Mara first travelled abroad, spending a summer in Scandinavia with a side trip into the Soviet Union. The high-school summer exchange program would shape her life, as it inspired her to learn to speak Russian and to try to end the Cold War. As a student, she further broadened her horizons, circling the globe on a research fellowship from the Circumnavigators' Foundation. This trip took her from Belize to Budapest, from Senegal to Singapore, comparing the successes and failures of international development projects. Despite the draw of many foreign lands, she still found herself returning to the former Soviet Union time and time again. Before the Soviet collapse, she taught English in Kyiv, Ukraine, for a year; and during the most tumultuous transition years, she worked on a foreign aid project in Yekaterinburg, Russia. The pen-wielding traveller has since taken to seeing and saving the world by other means, writing guidebooks for Lonely Planet. Mara has also written for National Geographic Traveler, Executive Travel, the Boston Globe and the LA Times, amongst others. She is an on-line travel expert at Triporati.com and Tripsketch.com. When not traipsing around the planet, she lives in a pink house in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Better than other 4 options for RoadTrips
By Rahul
I sat down and looked at 4 other options for Books on visiting Argentina. This one is great for those planning to road trip and visit other smaller cities. You can investigate all the smaller cities and look at other places to eat/sleep and visit. Pictures and recommended excursions are also indicated here. If you are traveling on tours or on a highend budget, then this book may not suit you. DK Eyewitness book may be better for those on tours, but both have great pictures and highlights. A map in the back on Buenos Aires is included.. almost a freebie! I would recommend this to anyone 18-50, who plans on freelance, unguided travel through Argentina. I cannot complain much about this book, other than the pages are really thin so be gentle with those book.

Buy the paperback- I own both kindle and paperback
By Fresca123
I must say that this travel guide was incredibly helpful for my first trip to Argentina. The guide includes a map, helpful hints to plan your trip( which helped me maximize funds), great cultural background, and a survival guide to Argentina. Also, the 'do not miss' sections were incredibly valuable. I found other travelers who stayed for a longer period of time than I did, hadn't experienced nearly half of the do not miss sections I visited after reading this guide. Unfortunately, I was disappointed navigating through contents using the kindle edition, so within an hour of struggling with the kindle links, I had to order the paperback version. With that said, this is an incredible guide. I was lucky to travel with my husband, so we were able to read information at the same time. He just had to struggle with the kindle while I read the paperback. Hehe.

I have been buying lonely planet guides in paperback since then. I highly recommend the following LP guides:Ireland, Boston, Galapagos, Montreal, and Alaska.

Probably THE worst Lonely Planet I've EVER owned
By KYoung
So... you probably purchase Lonely Planets because in the past these travel books provide information about off-the-beaten-path trips and things to do. This book absolutely does not deliver what I expect from Lonely Planet. You can only find very basic information about towns in Argentina, tour operators, restaurants, and accommodation. NOTHING ELSE. Not even basic information about various treks - you need to purchase the LP Trekking in Patagonian Andes to find that. For my purposes (backpacking in Patagonia, traveling between Argentina and Chile), I would have been better served by purchasing the LP South America on a Shoestring (has nearly the same information as LP Argentina, with info on other countries) and LP Trekking in Patagonian Andes books.

Review

"... a must-have text on this subject. It provides not only students, but those who deal with SCADA, insight into the various technologies and systems that exist along with their differences―both strengths and weaknesses. ... a very thoughtful resource on such an important, and rapidly changing, topic. This book also provides the next generation of power engineers with a ready reference to understand where we have been and where we can go in the not-too-distant future."
―David W. Roop, from IEEE Power and Energy Magazine, January/February 2016

"As a power system operator having nearly four decades of experience and as an end user of the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, I have always found the available literature on SCADA as limited and in the form of documents by vendors or in the form of research papers. This book is a first of its kind in the sense that it is ‘vendor neutral’ and very lucidly brings out various fundamental concepts related to SCADA. The book provides an excellent reference material both for beginners and practicing professionals. I would strongly recommend the book to all power system engineers as an essential reference material. … It provides an understanding of the historical and legacy systems as well as an insight into the new technologies. Automation is the key to the future, and the book appropriately delves into this aspect."
―Sushil Kumar Soonee, Power System Operation Corporation, New Delhi, India

"The authors cover all of the building blocks and detailed functionality of electric power SCADA systems, including a good deal of legacy hardware and older techniques. This is important because most large existing systems contain a mix of new and old equipment, with the latter being very poorly documented and therefore hard for newcomers in the field to understand. I would recommend this book to college students/new graduates as well as professionals coming from other industries who want to understand how electric power SCADA got to where it is, why it is evolving into new technologies, and what types of real-world challenges they will be encountering."
―Michael Thesing, Patterson & Dewar Engineers, Inc., Norcross, Georgia, USA

"Each topic, like ‘SCADA system’ and ‘remote terminal unit’ (RTU), has been introduced with a simple block diagram showing the various components followed by description of each component thereof. This approach will immensely help the student to learn the topic easily and systematically. Photographs of actual (commercially available) products like RTUs and relay intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) make the book very useful to students who are about to enter the engineering profession and to practicing engineers. … Advanced topics like ‘alarm suppression techniques’ and ‘intelligent electronic devices’ have been dealt with thoroughly. A laboratory implementation of SCADA, named ‘SCADA lab’, will be very useful as a learning model to students and as a research model to researchers. A full chapter on ‘SCADA communications’ does justice to this topic. The following topics are very well addressed in the book: small, medium, and large master stations; software modules of master stations; and human-machine interface (HMI) hardware components and software functionalities. … Issues like ‘open’ and ‘proprietary’ systems and ‘message security’ enhance the value of this book. ‘Case studies in SCADA systems’ give an insight into the practical SCADA systems. The concepts of ‘single master - single RTU’, ‘single master - multiple RTU’, and ‘multiple master - multiple RTU’ have been explained with simple block schematics. … The authors have a long experience of teaching the subject and working in the area, and … the book has been written well. … In my view, there was a long-felt need for a book of this type. The book does full justice to the subject of SCADA."
―HK Verma, Sharda University, Greater Noida, India

"The book is well written and well organized with good details to describe the basic concepts and key features of SCADA systems, including the overall system architecture, key components, functionalities, and the applications, as well as the adjacent sub-systems, such as the communication systems and the filed electronic devices. A few practical application example cases are also included in the book, which will be very useful references for the readers."
―Jiyuan Fan, Southern States LLC, Hampton, Georgia, USA

Helping Me Improve My Singing
By Wilhelmina Zeitgeist
"Singing Exercises For Dummies," with CD is actually helping me improve the sound of my singing. I used to be a pretty darn good singer when I was a teenager. But, my vocal ability has gotten quite rusty over the years. To the point where some friends have requested that I not sing if they aren't rolling their eyes and shaking their head. A few years ago I recorded myself singing so hear what I sounded like. Not very good. Quite bad to be honest with you.

What the heck happened? Where did my voice go? Maybe my ex got it in the divorce settlement. I knew I should have read the legal document a little closer before signing it!

Since doing the exercises with this book and CD I've begun to notice less annoyance from my friends when I sing along with the music playing on the stereo. I recently made another recording of myself singing and can definitely hear improvement.

I'm continuing to work with the exercises in the book and the CD. While I'm not shooting for a recording contract I am shooting for a vocal sound I enjoy singing with that won't annoy people.

Lots of specific tips -- for less than the price of a private lesson
By Carol C.
So you've been singing along with the car radio for years and still can't quite get it right??? Or you want to snag the lead in the community theater's summer production of Oklahoma? Perhaps this book will help. There is lots and lots and lots of information here, all for less than the cost of a single private singing lesson. And the book is not just for dummies. In fact, I'm not sure it is for dummies at all. I would definitely say it is for folks with some, even quite a bit, of music knowledge, someone who has been singing for a while. I've been singing in a women's chorus for several years. Our director is a music educator who takes every opportunity to teach us tricks for improving our performance. And although the warm ups and breathing exercises in here were somewhat familiar, the vast majority of the information was very new to me!

The author has a doctorate in music and plenty of classical, opera, and musical theater performance experience. The information in the book ranges from the most simple music theory to the highly complicated. There's something for everyone, but frankly, I think the book might be a bit too technical for a casual singer who just wants to get a little better.

The Chapters are:
1. Warming up for Singing
2. Practicing Breathing Exercises
3. Shaping the Tongue and Lips for Vowels
4. Articulating Consonants Accurately
5. Singing Precise Intervals for Musical Accuracy
6. Youve Got Rhythm: Conquering Rhythmic Notation and Tempo
7. Adding Diversity with Dynamics, Articulation Marks, and More
8. Checking Out Chest Voice
9. Soaring into Head Voice and Falsetto
10. Mixing Up Your Sound with Middle Voice
11. Coordinating Register Transitions
12. Developing Your Vocal Tone
13. Developing Your Vocal Agility
14. Belting it out with Exercises from Beginner to Advanced
15. Ten Tips for Practicing Like a Pro
16. Ten Questions Singers Ask Frequently

I found the chapters on shaping the tongue and lips for vowels and on articulating consonants accurately to be particularly challenging -- I wasn't quite sure what the author was saying half the time -- ("Singing the voiced J and unvoiced CH requires you to pucker your lips, place the tongue on the roof of your mouth to create a seal, and then release the seal to allow air to flow over the tip of the tongue") -- although no fault to the author; it is no doubt difficult to describe how we make different sounds. I was thrilled to get past the vowels and consonants and into the much simpler (at least for me) sections on rhythm and dynamics. The interval section was fun -- and I do think it will be extremely helpful in sight-reading and singing to master it. Love the "Singing All the Intervals" practice piece and other practice tips. The chapter on belting (which the author defines as "a combination of forward resonance and a mix of registers") was also WAY over my head. Maybe someday it will make sense to me.

Admittedly, I haven't worked through ALL of the exercises yet -- I've just kind of picked through parts that I understand and I think are doable. I suppose one could work through the entire book, like a coursebook, but I prefer to pick around. The book is really quite densely packed with information, and I think it will be something to go back to time and time again as I try to figure out specific singing challenges. I think if you really, really wanted to understand everything in the book and ensure you were applying it correctly, it would be helpful to have a little in-person guidance from a trained vocal coach along the way.

There is plenty of substantive content, but I do have a gripe about the presentation. The book is a large format (8.5" by 11") and printed on very flimsy newsprint. For something that will be used as a reference book -- you're not going to learn by singing through the exercises once -- rather than raced through like a romance novel -- this is disappointing.

Great exercises
By Maria
This book has many of the same exercises my singing teacher introduced to me. I'm happy with the purchase--especially since I'm taking a break from singing lessons. I just wanted a big book of singing exercises and this is it. I like that you can play the piano instead of using the cd.
