Acceptable, but not erotica

Acceptable story, but the main character had the most inane dialogue. It was like reading a bathroom wall in a high school. By the time you get through all the "ay carumbas", "happy humpings", etc. the erotic aspect of the story just gets lost. Otherwise, for a quick short read, it's all right, but only that. I'd sum it up by saying I'd give the author another chance if someone offered me a different book. I was displeased enough that I would not waste money on purchasing another book by the author though.

Steven M. Bellovin , a professor in the department of computer science at Columbia University, has played an active role in securing the Internet. He has received the Usenix Lifetime Achievement Award and the NIST/NSA National Computer Systems Security Award. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and of the Cybersecurity Hall of Fame, and has served as Chief Technologist of the Federal Trade Commission and as Security Area director for the Internet Engineering Task Force. Thought-provoking though academic in tone.

Prof. Bellovin is a well-known IT security expert. His book is quite thought-provoking, very recently published. At times it can seem a bit academic in tone. That's OK for me, as his information is very sound and thoroughly researched. It's a very dense, sometime tongue-in-cheek narrative. I'm not quite done with reading it my usual twice for books of this nature, but I will. I highly recommend acquiring and reading it, if you work or have responsibilities in the Information Technology Security area. You may not agree with each and every thing he says, but the book will lead you to sit back and reexamine many of the existing IT security "givens," upon which he casts well-deserved criticism. Owing to the publishing cycle, Microsoft's most recent desktop operating system, Windows 10, is not mentioned in the book. I hope there will be a second edition soon.

Really great work by Steve Bellovin

As a security practitioner on the "front-lines", I really enjoyed this book. Good coverage of threat modeling, and rational defense tactics and strategy. Most of the focus is on first principles (centralized auditing, logging, authentication, rational cloud storage & vm techniques, practical crypto considerations) which are easy to lose sight of in the trenches. Strongly recommended for students, technology professionals, and security researchers. Really, well done Dr. Bellovin.

My work on behalf of the National Landlords Association and as a trainer for the Midlands Landlords Accreditation Scheme, involves keeping up to date with everything about renting in the UK and brings me into contact with thousands of landlords and others who are involved in the business. I engage with many more landlords through discussion fora on internet sites and this too adds to my learning.
In this book I have explained why investing in property for rent in the UK may no longer be “as safe as houses”. I have explored the issues which are causing my concern and I have reported on my findings. I have tried not to impose my own opinions, preferring you to draw your own conclusions and to carry out further investigations.
The subjects I have explored include, the future of financing your investments, the dangers of buying below market value, regulation and legislation and how it is stifling private renting, the uncertain future of the student letting market, the changes made under Welfare Reform and the impacts these might have on rent arrears, the future of Letting and Managing Agents and other important issue. We all know that the private rented sector (PRS) is now a vital part of the housing provision in the UK but landlords are often seen as the “fat cats” and since many people are struggling to pay their bills we are attracting the attention of those who resent us and some who see us as potential cash cows.
The lenders are now wary of supporting landlords who let to some tenant groups and in particular they seem to have completely misunderstood the licensing of residential properties. At the same time local authorities see licensing as a means of raising revenue under the guise of improving standards. More licensing and less money available to investors leaves landlords with a ready market but no means to access it.
Those of us who have already invested in HMO’s are now at risks from the use of Article 4 Directions because of the requirement to provide evidence of established use. Those of us who have concentrated on families or single occupancy are facing the fact that, in the present economic climate, any of our tenants can become reliant on benefits to pay their rent. Welfare reforms have not only reduced the level of support to tenants, future changes may also increase the level of rent arrears, this has been proven in the areas where Universal Credit is being piloted.
Letting to students has, for many years, been seen as very lucrative and a safe investment but the huge increase in purpose built student accommodation coupled with the increase in fees being charged by universities is already decreasing the number of tenants living in privately rented properties and changes to immigration rules are set to reduce the number of students from coming overseas to study in the UK.

What would you do if a complete stranger came up to you after church and offered you a job with a huge salary? This is what happens in this novel – except it it is in a Hindu temple after puja.

I enjoyed the author’s Slumdog Millionaire so felt sure I’d enjoy this book too. This is his third novel. The premise of the plot is inspired by the reality television show The Apprentice.

India is well–described: its immense wealth side by side with its poverty, the stifling bureaucracy and bribes, forced marriages etc.

There’s a passing reference to someone being gay.

There are some weak similes: ‘my mind is spinning faster than a CD.’ Also "He's my soulmate, my strength, my rock"; "She was the apple of my eye, the life of the party, the heart of our family"; "He's my oxygen, I'll die without him" and "There's something very deflating about being confronted with a loaded gun." And it doesn't get much better when he tries imagery: "Hospitals are the boats that move damaged souls across the river of human sickness."

I enjoyed it despite/because of(?) its being so far-fetched.

Would not recommend for beginners

This book looks like it never went through editing. If it did, the editor doesn't know any code and didn't pay much attention to the other parts either. The code has multiple run together so that will confuse the new programmer. It has good information and is intuitive but, the words running together is confusing.

Very Short and over priced, shop elsewhere

This book is extremely small and only 100 pages. I strongly urge you to just watch online videos instead like microsoft virtual academy where you can go through a ton of C# tutorials. This book will show you have to use basic math, use the switch, use the for loop, pretty generic stuff really. If you already know a programming language of some sort and you are wanting to get into C# I would not really recommend this book at all. It touches briefly on inheritance and polymorphism which are often referred to as OOp or OOa&d concepts, but the short paragraph definitions I found to be extremely lacking in regards to other books I have read. The short appendix at the end of OOP DeMystified that I picked up used for 8 bucks did a far better job more effectively with less technical jargon. If this book was 8.99 then maybe I could recommend it but at it's current price of like 17 bucks, I really felt it was a rip off. In fact, I would even say that the author really stretched the content, images, diagrams, and font sizes to try and fill up the meager 100 pages as well.

Pathetic excuse for a book

I have not come across a worse book than this for a long time. It is a few tidbits of information pieced together and posing as a "book".

The text contained is generic and not specifically written for C#. I feel the author could had included snippets of codes in any other language and resale the exact same book for any language available out there.

The print and binding of the book are subpar, with the printing not even aligned on the top of the pages. The typeface used is an extra large font, and when you include code samples in those extra large fonts, the pages fill up quickly. The book attempted to introduce a lot of concepts within 100 pages - but what is the point of adding in a separate chapter in Multithreading, when the entire chapter is 5 pages long?!

So sweet and so helpful!

In this book, Magenta gets glasses. This involves a trip to the eye doctor. Of course, Steve and Blue go along for moral support. Magenta gets to tell the doctor which items are bigger, more in focus, and so on. Then she gets to pick out her own frames (purple of course!) and have the glasses fitted.

This book parallels the Blue's Clues TV episode of the same name. In the TV episode, Sherry Stringer (of ER fame - Susan) does the voice for the eye doctor.

Both the episode and the book adequately prepare a child for the experience of getting glasses. My two year old was so excited about this book (she hadn't seen the episode, although she will, via Tivo). It's precious and helpful in a stressful situation. My daughter picked out purple frames, in order to be like Magenta.

Good Book without name calling

Finally, a book without the negative name-calling i have seen in multiple other books! It just states that Magenta see's blurry, goes for an exam and tells of how she discovers all of the things she couldnt see before like the bird in the tree. It also emphasizes that she can pick out her own pair of frames for her glasses making her seem "cool." I highly recommend it for the preschooler-Kindergartner who is going to get glasses or just did. My 4 year old liked it and his teacher read it to the class.

That's from the television episode. It's not in this book, but that doesn't stop this book from being an excellent adaptation of the television story.

In this book, the readers follow from Magenta's perspective as she goes to get glasses. We get to "hear" Magenta's thoughts basically, as she worries the glasses will be too heavy and then later realizes how much the glasses are helping her. Magenta wanted to see a butterfly and with her new glasses, she finally can.

Anyone who's ever needed to get glasses will be able to identify with what happens in this story.

Final Exit - Your choice

I found this book to be incredibly informative. Watching my parents in the throes of death has made me vow to not do this to my children. Any ideas I had prior to reading this book were dispelled and I'm grateful to know what doesn't work! The book is not for the weak at heart - especially the illustrations but I've already connected with a partner and hope, that when the time comes, I'll have the fortitude to carry through.

A Book that Respects People's Choices About Dying

After I read this book (first edition published in 1991) by Derek Humphry, I read some reviews of it on this site as well as on other sites. In many cases, I wondered whether a particular reviewer read the same book as I did! There seems to be some confusion as to the purpose of this book.

I think the confusion stems from a lack of understanding of two terms. "Suicide" is deliberately ending one's life. It is usually an irrational act. (For the record, I don't believe in irrational suicide.) "Self-Deliverance" is the action of an irreversible ill person (such as a person who is hopelessly ill or is terminally ill) who makes a rational, voluntary decision to end his/her own life.

The second of these two definitions is what this book is about. In the author's own words: "Please respect the true intensions of [this book]: the right of a terminally ill person with unbearable suffering to know how to choose to die."

Thus, this book is not for the depressed, mentally ill, or suicidal. The author elaborates: "I ask people with suicidal thoughts to share them with family or friends and if this does not help, to call one of the hot lines or help lines listed in their local telephone books."

There is an argument that the above three types of people might use the information in this book for their own early demise (despite the book's warnings) and therefore it should not have been published. But this is like saying tall buildings (or cars or bridges or etc.) should not be built because those with the intension of suicide might use them for an early demise. The fact is a suicidal person will always find a way.

Also, this book is not for the religious. The author, again, elaborates: "If the reader of this book is deeply religious, and takes all guidance from a divinity, then there is no point in reading [this book]. [As well], all I [the author] ask of persons to whom any form of euthanasia [or assisted dying] is morally repugnant is tolerance and understanding of the feelings of others who want the right to choose what happens to their [dying] bodies in a free society." Thus, "this book assumes the reader's ethical acceptance of the right to choose to die when terminally ill and [so] the arguments for and against are not addressed."

This 27-chapter book covers all the practicalities involved in self-deliverance. From the importance of certain documents, to the law, to consideration of others, to the pros and cons of various methods (including certain drugs), you'll find this book a compassionate and sensitive guide. It contains clear instructions for supportive doctors and families so they can keep a person's dying intimate, private, and dignified.

This book has four appendices. I think most people will find Appendix A: "Glossary of Terms Connected with Dying" most informative.

Finally, this is an excellent book for those (like me) who are interested in knowing more about this neglected subject. The obvious fact is that we all die sooner or later. Knowing some of the information in this book will help the reader understand and not deny that death exists. As well, I learned about rights. Some people want to endure every last minute of life no matter how painfully gloomy and that is certainly their right. (In fact, there is a chapter in this book entitled "The Hospice Option.") However, others do not want to endure pain and suffering and I think that should be their right.

In conclusion, this book should not to be read by the depressed, suicidal, mentally ill, or the strictly religious. For all other readers, it can be used as a practical guide or as an educational text to understand death and basic human rights.

This is a manual, not a religous text

Final Exit does not discuss the spiritual and ethical issues surrounding suicide and euthanasia. Some have criticized Derek Humphry for not including such discussions, but I contend that author has acted appropriately: the scope of this book is inform others on how to effectively plan and execute the last moments of life. It would be presumptuous of the author to lecture his readers on their own faith. If you are looking for answers concerning the spiritual ramifications of ending your life, then you should refer directly to sources on which you base your faith.
Concerning Final Exit's effectiveness as a manual, the language is clear and concise, the description of materials and their use is accurate, and the book provides you with adequate information to help you troubleshoot any problems unique to your situation.
I left off one star only because some of the drugs mentioned in the book are next to impossible to obtain due to the termination of production by pharmaceutical companies. There are alternatives, but these will require a bit more effort on the part of the reader.
