Best Available Writing Guide about Film, but Ridiculously Over-priced

This is perhaps the best writing guide to film criticism presently available, but at $130.00 list I'd only recommend buying a used copy.

I wish this book were available at a reasonable price, but like most Longman titles it's ridiculously expensive. If it were cheaper, I'd require this for my own film classes. The only serious competitor, to my mind, is Timothy Corrigan's "A Short Guide to Writing about Film" (also an over-priced Longman title).

"An Introduction to Film Criticism" is divided into 7 chapters (each devoted to a different critical approach--including journalistic, humanist, auteurist, genre, social science, historical, and ideological/theoretical approaches) and an appendix with sample essays. Each chapter begins with a "capsule" summary identifying the audience, subject, function, writers, and publications typical of each approach. Every chapter proceeds to provide a short history/overview of each approach as well as guidelines and examples of writing within each area and varied discussions of each approach's aims and merits. The book concludes with an appendix containing samples of actual reviews and essays from each approach, a short chronology of film reviewing, criticism and theory, a bibliography and a glossary.

In short, this is an excellent book that covers virtually every topic an introduction to writing about film should contain--and then some. The only possible faults I could find with the text per se are that it contains very few illustrations and it is not as lively as it could be. But those minor criticisms aside, were it not priced at $130.00 I would heartily recommend it without reservation. As is, I can only recommend buying a used copy--of which, thankfully, there are many available (at this writing).

useful for students but way overpriced

This book is designed as a supplementary textbook for an introductory film studies class. Its purpose is to introduce students to the major forms of film criticism and prepare them for writing their own film criticism. There is an appendix with sample essays, and the authors provide typical questions that students might address in their essays, but the emphasis is not on the nuts and bolts of writing a college essay. There are chapters on "journalistic," "humanist," "auteur," "genre," "social science," "historical," and "ideological/theoretical" approaches to writing about film. Each chapter gives a brief history of this type of writing, the basic premises, and the kinds of issues and questions addressed. It is not an interesting read. I love reading about film, but reading about writing on film is not especially interesting. The field of writing on film is vast, and this is a rather thin book, so the coverage seems somewhat superficial. The different categories of writing about film seemed rather arbitrary and awkward; there is a lot of overlap between categories. For a thin and rather boring book, the price of $99 (Amazon price $89) is ridiculous.

An Enjoyable Look at Cinema Monsters!

I enjoyed this book. It represents a fast and pleasurable romp through the history of movie monsters from the silent era to today. John Landis, as almost everyone knows, directed some of the most well known and culturally influential movies, including An American Werewolf in London and The Blues Brothers. Landis's love for Dark Fantasy films really shines here and hooks the reader. The pictures are very attractive and the interviews with well known personalities involved with monster movies were educational. Landis is a very opinionated writer which I find to be refreshing. In his interviews, he is able to draw out blunt observations from those he talked with.

The monster movies are grouped into broad categories throughout the book. They are: Vampires, Werewolves, Mad Scientists, Zombies, Ghosts, Mummies, Myths/Legends/Fairy Tales, Dragons/Dinosaurs, Monstrous Apes, Nature's Revenge, Atomic Mutations, The Devil's Work, Space Monsters, Monstrous Machines, Human Monsters, and The Monster Makers. At the beginning of each section, Landis would provide a two page overview about the subject or topic. His writings are clear, succinct, and knowledgeable, with the right touch of humor.

This is a book that any fans of Dark Fantasy movies will want to obtain and read (and re-read) during any "dark and gloomy nights."

Come for the pictures, stay for the text!

An incredibly lavish collection of hundreds of amazing pictures of all your favorite movie monsters ... many I have never seen before. You will spend some serious time looking at this. But, don't just look. Read. The interviews with Joe Dante, Sam Raimi, John Carpenter, Ray Harryhausen, Guillermo Del Toro, Rick Baker and David Cronenberg (and the captions of the photos) by the highly-opinionated and highly-entertaining and well-informed Landis are just great.

A beautiful shout to the horrible.

It's like thumbing through the best issue of FAMOUS MONSTERS you ever held in your hand -- and then you get to go back and *read it*! I only saw one egregious error my first time thru: on page 81, they mistakenly credit a shot from the original 1958 THE FLY [that movie was in color, as many traumatized kids can attest] to RETURN OF THE FLY, the cheapo b&w sequel that featured the HUGE fly-head. Oops. But since they printed the shot from the color movie in b&w [why?], maybe nerddom can forgive. Landis is so well connected that your bonus, besides the usual brilliant D-K page designs, is a series of ruminations from the best directors in the genre. Even the cover is scary.
