Un Roman d'Haute Normandie

Quels sont les secrets, prudemment gardés, des personnes avec lesquelles nous partagions une vie? Quels sont les limites, et meme les profondeurs, de notre ignorance et naiveté si bien nourries? Quand le dernier crépuscule tombe et dédaigne de s'attarder, qu'est-ce qu'il nous restera pour nous mener a bon fin? Sur quoi pourrons nous prodiguer les derniers de nos jours? Voila quelques unes des questions caverneuses qui s'ouvrent béantes avant ceux qui lisent ce roman. L'héroine est agréable a l'exces, mais alors meme qu'on l'aime--et en fait on l'aime jusqu'a la fin--on commence a se demander si elle vraiment a toute sa tete. Est-elle en effet incapable d'éviter quelques unes des horreurs qui l'assaillent? Est-elle l'innocente victime de ceux qui décident son sort at qui l'ont créé comme elle est? Chose étrange, mais c'est possible que le personnage le plus attachant de ce roman c'est la demeure ancestrale, ou la plupart de l'action a lieu. Plantée sur une falaise aupres d'Yport, au Pays de Caux en Haute Normandie, elle regarde la mer qu'il pleuve ou qu'il vente, aimée par ses habitants, mais beaucoup desservie en fin de compte. Pourtant elle connaît la ténacité et la mesure et sa place. Si seulement ceux qui s'abritent derriere ses murs pourraient apprendres de ses lignes, de son bon sens silencieux, de son ordre, de son repos.

Jeanne est un personnage attachant qui nous pousse à réfléchir sur la vie et ce qu'elle nous offre.

Well written as one would expect from such a classical author.
A true to life story and a compelling easy read.
Even though sheltered from needs in terms of parents' love and money, one bad decision can change all of that overnight and shatter one's future.
The story highlights what some women have to endure whilst looking for happiness, including the abuse of a mother's unconditional love for her child.
Happy ending.
Quote " La vie, ca n'est jamais si bon ni si mauvais qu'on croit".

Quirky and delightful

Rarely can such an eclectic range of adjectives apply to one small book. Highly enjoyable comes first, but that must be accompanied by unique, quirky, absurd, delightful and intellectually challenging. Comic strip like in format, it is funny at any level, yet even more so for those with some background in science, literature and history in which the author is clearly conversant. My thought is that a copy of this little gem would sure beat a greeting card for lifting the spirits of a friend.

What a delightful surprise!

When I first received "Fateful Encounters," I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was intrigued by the notion of "14 of the World's Shortest Graphic Novels." What a delight! From "Adventures in Reading" to "The Awful Truth" and, my favorite, "Turf Grasses," "Fateful Encounters" offers a wry, witty and sometimes twisted view of the world through Mr. Van Dine's eyes. I liked this so much, I bought a few more as gifts for friends. Highly recommend for anyone looking to laugh.

Bruce M. Kamich is Vice President at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney's Technical Analysis Group and coauthors their flagship publication the Daily Technical Market Letter. He also teaches technical analysis to various Morgan Stanley Smith Barney trading desks. He is an adjunct professor at Baruch College and has also taught at Rutgers University, as well as being a guest lecturer on many other campuses. He has twice served as president of the Market Technician's Association (MTA) and is currently president of the MTA Educational Foundation. Kamich is also the author of How Technical Analyisis Works (NYIF/Prentice Hall Press, 2002).

A rather thin book on different patters found in the bar chart (e.g. head and shoulder, triangles) using daily charts. This is classic territory, since the bar chart ruled the world before the candlesticks entered in the 90s. The patterns can naturally also be applied to candlesticks.

As a description of the standard patterns this book is as good as any, but since the patters have been described in very similar fashion for at least 50 years, I expected something more from this book. I would have liked (1) a description of why the patterns happens, (2) an insightful understanding of what has changed over time, or (3) a discussion of intraday charts. Maybe it wouldn't fit with the book's objective to deal with 5 min charts, but hourly charts should definitely have been covered. He states that he isn't really familiar with intra-day charts. I'd say it's time to learn!

I don't get the feeling that the author really "lives the markets". The book feels very mechanical and there is no passion in the author's voice. The author doesn't try to probe deeper by adding something novel in his book. He seems perfectly happy writing a book that could have been written 50 years ago. Out of the four people that recommend the book on the back cover, two are also thanked for their contribution to the book. It would have been much smarter to solicit reviews from people that were not involved in providing support to the author.

Alternatives?
The classic book on chart patterns is Technical Analysis of Stock Trends by Robert D. Edwards and John Magee. The latest version book is really too thick and I would advice to get an edition prior to the mid 1980s. (That's right - very old!). I find the latest editions really too wordy and messy. The old editions are also too wordy, but less so. In addition the old editions (at least the early 80s edition) are also beautifully bound - something that looks good in your bookshelf. That cannot be said about the latest ugly version.

You could also buy Brandt's Diary of a Professional Commodity Trader: Lessons from 21 Weeks of Real Trading, which contains kind of a running commentary of which patterns are still useful, etc. Brandt considers himself an Edwards & Magee follower, but he also states that traditional chart patterns are no longer as valid in the past, but you should not expect too much thinking in that book. Still he is a successful trader for a long time that claims to follow Edwards & Magee, so worth a look.

If you are in for doing more work, I would advice you to check out Trading Price Action Trends: Technical Analysis of Price Charts Bar by Bar for the Serious Trader (Wiley Trading) (first volume of three). Even though the author uses candlesticks the focus is more on the classical bar chart formations, like wedges, triangles, flags, and channels. Just be aware that the focus here is on five minute charts.

An Excellent Contribution to the Field

This is a well written, edited, and organized book on a subject close to advanced investors and active traders. The author focuses on the principal chart patterns that, having stood the test of time, predominate, and whose analysis can be rewarding. It is not an encyclopedia of chart patterns.

The author documents some of the historical background surrounding the use of chart patterns, an element that shows the author's indepth level of research in this subject. Each pattern is described and explained with excellent examples, and references are provided for those interested in further study.

The book is not the heavy, lengthy tome that often characterizes this subject. The writing is first class adding to its educational value and distinguishing it from the hard reading that often marks technical analysis. It is an excellent source to have in one's library.

Generic overview of the same old stuff

This is just a generic overview of chart patterns. The information in the book does talk about more recent events such as the Lehman collapse and the recession of 2008. For just about every chart there are 3 pages of long-winded explanations. The author doesnt bring up any new ideas or patterns. Most of the information can be found for free over at investopedia if you are willing to do a little digging.

Author of The Friends of Eddie Coyle and many other books, and professor of creative writing (he calls it "spoiling the paper"), Higgins here develops his insights into the psychology of authorship and the essentials of good writing. Creative writing, he feels, draws on a need to tell stories ("all fiction is gossip") so obsessive that even mundane difficulties or the specter of rejection fail to stop the flow. Because reading fine writers promotes good writing, he suggests many apt titles and includes, from writers such as Dickens, Thurber, Hemingway, and others, passages that exhibit mastery of elements that daunt beginners, such as mood and dialog. Concerned less with mere sales than with quality work, this book is recommended as a stimulating blend of literary essay and good advice.

Well written and good advice for the aspiring writer.He uses ext extnsive quotes from good writers to illustrate his points. I found that helpful and incidentally this led me to some new works.

The Friends of George V

You can get this book for a penny (+3.99 S&H, so 4 bucks). Here are the reasons this book is worth four bucks: Higgins is funny. His advice will make you laugh and probably break your ego a bit. I don't know how relevant this advice is in this day and age, but I think much of it still has value. `Here is what editors want, here's what you should do if you want to get published' is the basic premise. This isn't to say that Higgins has no integrity--he has plenty. He very much believes in his definitions of "good" writing and "bad" writing, and he makes a strong case for Papa-style and against Thomas Wolfe-style.

Another reason this book is worth four bucks is that it's darn near an anthology. Higgins quotes much great material--including the first chapter of Farewell to Arms, an entire John O'Hara story, a big chunk of Gay Talese's wonderful "Silent Season of the Hero" about an aged Joe DiMaggio (still pining for Marilyn, of course), Irwin Shaw, and some more great stuff. You might be introduced to some really great writing that has been forgotten (or at least I never hear about Talese, etc, these days). How did the publisher get permission to print all this? Was it expensive?

So, to recap: you get fun, funny advice and killer excerpts. It's worth four bucks. You should also read The Friends of Eddie Coyle because it is the greatest book in the world.

Only the Truth from George V.

Read it because you love George V. Higgins: or read it because you really want to learn about writing fiction. He's not going to tell you it's easy, 'cause it isn't. But if you just have to do it, like he did, then this shows you the light at the end of the tunnel, and how to get there.
