Beautiful as usual but know what you're getting in to

I should admit up front I'm a bit of a fan of Iain Rice's work. His illustration style of water colors on ink is one of the best layout presentation styles being published today. Of course when another book of his came up I had to pick it up.

Regarding this book, there are a few things to be aware of. As are most Kalmbach books of the last few years, this is a thin soft cover book with the glue typed binding and a glossy cover. The content within could roughly be divided into two parts. The first part covers the concepts of "compact" layout design and the second part is about a half dozen examples of compact layout design. As Iain is a well published author in the model railroading space a fairly decent amount of part one has been published elsewhere. I don't mean to say the content is completely a word-for-word re-print, but many of the ideas aren't exactly new either.

If you've read "Mid-Sized and Manageable" a decent portion of the conversation about the pros and cons of layout size will sound familiar. Additionally if you've read "Shelf Layouts" or any of his numerous articles in "Model Railroad Planning" then the strategies for dealing with the challenges of compact layouts will likewise sound familiar.

As is true for most Kalmbach books, there are many pictures of model railroads throughout. Many of these pictures were re-prints from other Kalmbach publications but I will give the editors credit for including a really wide variety. For example John Olson's HOn30 Blackhole Mine from the early 1980's is featured just a few pages away from Mike Confalone's HO Woodsville Terminal. The breadth of layout themes and styles displayed in the photos is excellent. However if you've been reading Model Railroader for a while you've probably seen many of them.

Before buying this book you should be clear on what exactly constitutes a "compact layout". To be honest, I was assuming the author was talking about "compact" in the sense of "portable" or "semi-portable"; maybe something nice to adorn a home office or a sectional layout to take to a model railroading show. However by the author's own words "compact" means 100-200 square feet. For reference the average bedroom is in the 100 to 120 square foot range. Many of the plans presented in part 2 will require a slightly larger den to accommodate (think 10x15 ft).

The themes included in the book are representation of the author's typical tendency towards slower-paced, "intimate" railroads, though there one or two plans that represent larger regional lines. There is a fairly even distribution of HO and N scale plans, with a single On30 plan at the end.

Regarding the plans, one thing I was slightly disappointed in was the complexity of the benchwork. Perhaps this relates back to my initial expectation of the book being about semi-portable layouts, but several of the track plans given require things like smoothly curving fascias, narrow peninsulas, multi-level benchwork (ala hidden staging), and swinging entry gates. I've tried all of the major benchwork building styles and have attempted several of the elements previously mentioned and call tell you that things like these add considerable complexity to layout construction and are notably more demanding in terms of the engineering precision. "Compact" in the case of this book apparently does not translate to "simple". (As an aside if simple is more in your target, Lance Mindeim's shelf layout books are probably a better pick).

Still, it's hard not to appreciate the pure presentational power this book. The water colored illustrations are fabulous. It's always a treat to spend time studying the work of someone who is undoubtably a model railroading design master. Even if I never build any of these layouts at $18 it's still a book that I will likely continue to enjoy as I come back to it from time to time to study the work in it.

A rehash of previously published info. Pretty track plans that are impossible to build with commercial components. The author seems addicted to curved turnouts in non-standard sizes. Really not worth the money.

Compact isn't always that small....

Great ideas for "compact" layouts. I figured the layouts featured would be "small" but they are between small and a large layout. The basic size is about a spare bedroom.

The author provides insights from years of modeling and there are ideas here for people with smaller or larger layouts.

Bowie's book excels in a number of ways.
First, Bowie gives an exposition of Schelling that is engaging and readable without sacrificing any of the complexity of Schelling's thought. The book's readability is no mean feat considering the difficulty of Schelling's work.
Second, more than just an introduction to an unfairly obscure figure in the history of philosophy, Bowie argues convincingly for the importance of Schelling in understanding important matters in the history of philosophy as well as in ongoing debates. Bowie notes similarities between debates within german idealism and analytic philosophy and pragmatism, and points out that the resurgence of pragmatism and pragmatics in the philosophy of language raises issues addressed earlier (though in a different vocabulary) by Schelling.
Third, by demonstrating the importance and relevance of Schelling to contemporary matters, Bowie makes clear that the history of philosophy is relevant to contemporary philosophy, something occasionally lost to more problem driven approaches.
All in all, I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in the history of philosophy, german idealism and the traditions which grew out of german idealism, pragmatism, and questions of interdisciplinarity and the arts in relation to philosophy.

A great accomplishment in behalf of the great Schelling

It seemed for a long time that Schelling would be condemned to the status of a footnote in texts on Hegel, but recent interest -- including the Zizek's Indivisible Remainder -- has made Schelling a second-to-none must-read. Bowie's text is both encyclopedic in its range of topic, and sensitive to topics once eschewed by philosophers. While I do not hold the same low opinion of Hegel as Bowie seems to (quite to the contrary, in fact), I nevertheless agree almost entirely with his reading of Schelling. And it is a good read, too boot.

An introduction to the work of Friedrich Schelling

Schelling and Modern European Philosophy, by Andrew Bowie, Routledge, 1993, 228 ff.

This is a book written for advanced undergraduate students of philosophy by an author who, at the time, was Professor of European Philosophy at Anglia Polytechnic University in Cambridge. Bowie here gives a detailed account of the ideas of a German philosopher whose work tends to get overlooked as it was produced between that of the much more influential philosophers, Kant and Hegel.

One of the main foci of attention of philosophers in the 20th century was the use and meaning of language. Many philosophers of this period spend much of their texts dwelling on the precise meanings of the language that philosophers of the past have used: Bowie is no exception. I found my own attention wandering from time to time in reading this text pondering over the meanings of sentences and wondering what exactly was the point that the author was trying to make. More than once I got lost in the detail of the presentation. There are also many references in this book to the work of other philosophers, some of whom were quite new to me (I am not a philosophy graduate). The author is an authority on Heidegger too, so there are many references to and comparisons with Heidegger's philosophy. So unless you are making a detailed study of Schelling, I think most readers will find this book quite heavy going, though its authority is unquestionable. There are Notes, a Bibliography and an Index at the end.

A more accessible introduction to Schelling and those who influenced or were influenced by him are the books, also by Bowie, on `An Introduction to German Philosophy' or, even more briefly, A Very Short Introduction to German Philosophy; or the quite extensive (more than one hundred page) Introductions in the translation of Hegel's `Essay on The Difference between Fichte's and Schelling's System of Philosophy', translated and edited by Harris and Cerf.

About the Author
Michael P. Papazoglou holds the chair of Computer Science and is director of the INFOLAB at the Univ. of Tilburg in the Netherlands. he is also a honorary professor at the University of Trento in Italy. Prior to this (1991-6), he was full Professor and head of School of Information Systems at the Queensland University of Technology (QUR) in Brisbane, Australia. he also held senior academic positions at the Australian National University, the University of Koblenz, Germany, Fern Universitaet Hagen, Germany, and was principal research scientist at the National German research centre for Computer Science (GMD) in St. Augustin from 1983-9.

Papazoglou serves on several international committees and on the editorial board of nine international scientific journals and is co-editor in charge of the MIT book series on Information Systems. He has chaired numerous well-known international scientific conferences in Computer Science. These include the International Conference on data Engineering (ICDE), International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS), International Conference on Digital Libraries (ICDL), International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS), International Conference on Entity/Relationship Modelling and others. He is the founder of the International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS) and more recently of the International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC).

Papazoglou has authored or edited 15 books and approximately 150 scientific journal articles and refereed conference papers. His research was/is funded by the European commission, the Australian Research council, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, and Departments of Science and Technology in Europe and Australia. He is a golden core member and a distinguished visitor of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Science section.

Pieter M. Ribbers holds the chair of Information Management at Tilburg University, The Netherlands, where he also is head of the Department of Information Systems and Management . From 1991 till 1994 he held a position as affiliated Professor Information Management at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. His interests span management of information technology (in particular question related to alignment and information economics), inter-organizational Systems (in particular electronic commerce), and the strategic and organization consequences of the use of information technology. He is active as researcher, lecturer and consultant. he has supervised more than 20 PhD theses and has contributed articles in this field to national and international professional journals and has (co)authored several books. He is active at international conferences in information systems (ECIS, HICSS, ICIS) and is a member of the editorial board of Information and Management - The International Journal of Information Systems Applications. He has also participated in research programs of the European Commission. As a consultant he has worked with companies such as Brunel, Nolan, Norton & Co., and ING Group especially in outsourcing, scenario development and information economics.

Out of date and poorly written.

I purchased this book only because it was a required text book for my Business Information Systems course. This book is probably the worst book I've used in all of my bachelors program. I agree with the other negative reviews completely. I'm very interested in the subject but this book is worse than "reading a dictionary" as another reviewer commented. It's like reading a phone book; specifically the white pages. It's outdated by today's e-business standards and uses almost zero real-world examples. The few case studies presented are terrible and very general.

It can provide some theory to get your mind headed in the right direction but that's only if you can stay awake past the first two pages. I'd recommend getting a book that has been more recently published and uses some recent practical examples to help the reader apply the knowledge.

Also, the section on the product page that says "Editorial Review" is incorrect. The review describes the details of a different book and does not summarize key points you will learn from this e-Business book. It's a mistake that Amazon has not yet caught.

Very good academic work but...

If you are new to e-business don't start with this book. The book present a very good investigation and strong academic work in general. The issue I have with it is that it's not practical and not written in a way that helps to understand and learn the concepts; it's like reading a dictionary or specifications documents. The case study material is minimun and no actual implementations are covered.
I guess it makes great reference material for someone who is developing/modifying e-Business tools.
