Although popular history holds that Britain entered World War II with no prior knowledge of or experience with underground warfare, Rediscovering Irregular Warfare tells us otherwise. Linderman finds ample precedent in the clearly documented work of Gubbins and his fellow clandestine organizers. He traces Gubbins’s career from 1914 through World War I and such irregular conflicts as the Allied intervention in Russia, the Irish Revolution, and conflicts in British India. To these firsthand experiences, Gubbins added the insights of colleagues who had served with him and in Iraq, as well as what he learned from the Second Anglo-Boer War, the Arab Revolt led by T. E. Lawrence, the German guerrilla war in East Africa, the revolt in Palestine between the world wars, the Spanish Civil War, and the Second Sino-Japanese War. The two booklets that Gubbins wrote based on his accumulated knowledge offered the first synthesis of British unconventional warfare doctrine: practical guides that emphasized the centrality of local populations; the collection, protection, and use of intelligence; the necessity of cooperating with conventional forces; and the use of speed, surprise, and escape in ambush operations. In 1940, when Gubbins joined the newly created SOE, the experience and know-how codified in his guides formed the basis of Britain’s approach to irregular warfare.

The history of the SOE’s doctrinal origins is Colin Gubbins’s story. By telling that story, Rediscovering Irregular Warfare amplifies and clarifies our understanding of the Second World War—and of doctrines of unconventional warfare in the twentieth century.

Also, it clarifies the difference in Guerrila Warfare,Counterisurgency and Commando/Direct Action Operations which so often is confusing when all of these are lumped together under "Special Operations" .

This book should be required reading for all Americans, written by a man who, as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during the VietNam War period, can write with some authority about international affairs. Fulbright's thesis is that Americans have two sides, one that is humanitarian and one that is puritanical.
While we may want to see others enjoy the virtues of democracy and freedom (our humanitarianism) we tend to approach them with an air of superiority and an inability to see that there are many cultures in the world and that of the U.S. is only one.
How accurate Fulbright is when he says that unilateral aid, either military or economic, can evoke anger and resentment by those who, Americans feel, should be grateful and eager to receive what we have to give.
Fulbright asks Americans to reflect on the fact that ours is a profoundly conservative society which abhors radical change. Others in the world are impatient with the lack of change and can go to extremes that would never be considered in the United States. Fulbright sees this in the discomfort Americans have with revolutions, being good only if they follow the path of our own. Any route that differs from American experience is suspect.
Fulbright rightly sees the strength of American society in the freedom to dissent and laments the fear and approbrium that dissent often receives. Humility is definitely in order instead of loud boasting and self-righteous denunciations (heard any of that lately???)
Tocqueville said of American democracy..."the smallest reproach irritates its sensibility and the slightest joke that has any foundation in truth renders it indignant; from the forms of its language up to the solid virtues of its character, everything must be made the subject of encomium. No writer, whatever be his eminence, can escape paying this tribute of adulation to his fellow citizens."
This book is Fulbright's effort to speak the truth. It's good to read at a time when we daily hear from powerful politicians who are never wrong and who seem to feel the amount of truth in a statement comes from the number of times it is repeated.
Fulbright's description of the use of fear to drum up support for foreign intervention is exactly to the point in the 21st century with talk of unilateral interventions. Having members of the United States Congress with the author's courage to speak out would simultaneously benefit the prospects for democracy and the image of the United States worldwide.

Reading a Legacy

At a time when there were no heart transplants and America had yet to put a man on the moon, one man wrote a book that speaks of our country today as much as it did when he wrote it in 1966.

It is a reflection on what we have become, and the choices we make for our future. There are two competing forces for the direction we take, what the author Senator J. William Fullbright calls two Americas: One is the America of Lincoln and Adlai Stevenson and the other is of Theodore Roosevelt and the Superpatriots. They are two distinct sides of the American character. The character of Lincoln is rooted in humanism and assumes that America's greatness is its recognition of its imperfections. The character of Roosevelt is rooted in American Exceptionalism, or what the senator refers to as an arrogance of power.

The dominant strand of the American fabric is the democratic humanist one. It is rooted in the principles of our Founding Fathers, humanism, tolerance and accommodation. The coexisting strand is that of Theodore Roosevelt's belief in America's superiority, or what Fullbright sees as intolerant Puritanism. It is the belief that America expresses its cultural superiority through its wealth and dominance, that superiority is measured in military might.

According to Senator Fullbright these forces of the American body politic have been at odds for years with the belief in America's superiority dominating foreign and domestic policy. This is the strand the senator contends must not prevail. This path follows previous empires that failed because rulers did not rule wisely or well. He profoundly states, "power tends to confuse itself with virtue and a great nation is peculiarly susceptible to the idea that its power is a sign of God's favor, conferring upon it a special responsibility for other nations to make them richer and happier and wiser, to remake them, that is, in its own shining image." (Does this sound familiar)?

This superpatriot model is moralistic as well as it is imperial. It demands conformity on its citizens for whatever foreign policy it embarks upon. It fails to recognize that American values are not tied to it but separate and distinct. Fullbright contends that the very light and vibrance of a democracy can be found in its dissent; it is its greatest example of freedom and energy.

Noble intentions are not an example of a nation's greatness, as the author shows that historical interference in the affairs of others were all done with excellent intentions. This becomes a drain on a country's power that leads to political insignificance and irrelevance. Even our benevolence can be seen as humiliation, as our assistance is an embarrassing loss of face, and as we tell other nations what they should do to improve their economic or political circumstances. We are baffled by their lack of gratitude.

Just as the most effective leadership is by example, other nations will be influenced by us by the way they see the welfare of our citizens. America's greatest influence on others is the level of education, health, and standard of living we provide our citizens. They will not be influenced by our military might, a policy of solitary interest, or our "arrogance of power."

Our country is now at the height of its American Exceptionalism, which means it is at the depth of its greatness. Our continuation on this path will lead to our downfall. Our recognition that we are a partner in the family of nations and not its parent, will enhance our stature, not diminish it.

Senator J. William Fullbright died February 9, 1995. This book is one of his legacies. As long as people read and cherish this book that legacy continues.

Must Read

I was no fan of Fulbright's in the '60s but this book opened my eyes to the startling parallels between then and now, forty years later. It's a "must read" for anybody who wants to put today's global events in perspective. And that his widow, Harriet, was a childhood friend of mine, does not skew this review! I read the book with an initial bias against his views but was completely converted by the end.

About the Author
Ingri Mortenson and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire met at art school in Munich in 1921. Edgar’s father was a noted Italian portrait painter, his mother a Parisian. Ingri, the youngest of five children, traced her lineage back to the Viking kings.

The couple married in Norway, then moved to Paris. As Bohemian artists, they often talked about emigrating to America. “The enormous continent with all its possibilities and grandeur caught our imagination,” Edgar later recalled.

A small payment from a bus accident provided the means. Edgar sailed alone to New York where he earned enough by illustrating books to buy passage for his wife. Once there, Ingri painted portraits and hosted modest dinner parties. The head librarian of the New York Public Library’s juvenile department attended one of those. Why, she asked, didn’t they create picture books for children?

The d’Aulaires published their first children’s book in 1931. Next came three books steeped in the Scandinavian folklore of Ingri’s childhood. Then the couple turned their talents to the history of their new country. The result was a series of beautifully illustrated books about American heroes, one of which, Abraham Lincoln, won the d’Aulaires the American Library Association’s Caldecott Medal. Finally they turned to the realm of myths.

The d’Aulaires worked as a team on both art and text throughout their joint career. Originally, they used stone lithography for their illustrations. A single four-color illustration required four slabs of Bavarian limestone that weighed up to two hundred pounds apiece. The technique gave their illustrations an uncanny hand-drawn vibrancy. When, in the early 1960s, this process became too expensive, the d’Aulaires switched to acetate sheets which closely approximated the texture of lithographic stone.

In their nearly five-decade career, the d’Aulaires received high critical acclaim for their distinguished contributions to children’s literature. They were working on a new book when Ingri died in 1980 at the age of seventy-five. Edgar continued working until he died in 1985 at the age of eighty-six.

Michael Chabon is the author of several books, including The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, Wonder Boys, The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Klay, The Yiddish Policeman’s Union, Manhood for Amateurs: The Pleasures and Regrets of a Husband, Father, and Son and, most recently, Telegraph Avenue.

The Classic Standard, Still

This is the classic, the standard by which the telling of Norse mythology is measured. I first read it as an older child of ten, and it still holds up perfectly to this day. Get this and d'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths for the best bedtime reading you could ever give to a kid.

Absolutely Perfect (ages 5 and 7)

Absolutely Perfect for my two kids, ages 5 and 7. They have a pretty good vocabulary though, and a willingness to learn new words.

This book is written at a level that is definitely appropriate for kids being read to. The language is relatively easy, though it would be challenging for them to read on their own due to some of the word choices (which are perfect and fit the style). I see this as an advantage since it is just challenging enough for them to be learning new words as well as new stories, without being so challenging that they get bored.

The book also leaves out the gory details of what the gods are doing when they sneak away together, and so on; so parents need not worry about it being *too* colorful. Yet the stories are told true to their origins.

My kids beg for this book every night -- definitely get this one.

Furthering our Knowledge

I have the D'Aulaires Greek Myths and love it. Super glad that I added the D'Aulaires Norse Myths to our collection. My oldest son 13 is reading this to further his knowledge of the myths. However, I'm reading it to my little ones ages 8 & 10 to give them an understanding of the myths to go along with our Viking study in our homeschool. I believe this book is great for any age 6 and above. I find this book interesting myself. Written in a story manner, not textbook. Never boring! The pages are very delicate though they are made of a color page like paper. The illustrations aren't as vivid like I would hope. The greek myth book has vivid pages. I do love the hard cover of this book. Another wonderful book to further our learning as a homeschooling family!

When US combat units began arriving in Vietnam in mid-1965 they were initially based in coastal cities. Later, more inland bases were established and more seaports opened. The logistical efforts expanded and it became a major effort to run convoys to these bases. About the Author
Gordon L. Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He served in the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969-70 and subsequently in airborne infantry, long-range patrol and intelligence assignments until retiring after 26 years. He was a Special Operations Forces scenario writer at the Joint Readiness Training Center for 12 years and is now a freelance writer, living in Texas.

Gun Trucks Explained

This book give a in depth look at the convoy structure which developed during the Vietnam war.
The descriptions of the gun trucks and there usage by all facets of the military was interesting.
I think additional color plates of gun trucks would have been a nice addition.
I have gotten James Lyles series on gun trucks which is of great assistance because James main focus is the pictures available of gun trucks and the crews that served.

The book covers the inception, development and use of the gun truck during the Vietnam war. Although no two gun trucks were alike and no standards existed for the construction of the trucks, they followed certain patterns. There are many drawings and photos of typical trucks and photos of individual trucks. It is with having in your library.

Great book on a forgotten topic

During the Vietnam War enemy insurgents tried to hurt U.S. and Free World soldiers by cutting off their supply lines. Since most supplies were provided by truck convoys roadside ambushes became a common event. Military Police were designated for route security but were not available in the numbers needed to keep the routes secured and it wasn't the job of ground troops to do it either. So, transport provided their own security for convoys by escorting them with gun trucks, improvised weapon platforms which could hammer the enemy if they tried to attack the vulnerable convoys.

These vehicles were primitive at first, utilizing sandbags and prefab metal shielding for protection while using a few light machineguns for firepower. These would be exchanged for armor plating and a variety of weapons. Gun crews also painted nicknames and artwork on their gun trucks.

This is a great book, even though it's a bit of a slim volume. It includes original artwork and period photos as well useful lists such as names of known gun trucks used in Vietnam. The author discusses the evolution of the weapons, the units which employed them and many other interesting bits of information. The only thing that annoyed me was his references to "artillery air defense" units and weapons. The correct designation is Air Defense Artillery, which became a seperate branch during the Vietnam War. As an old ADA missile officer myself I found it a little grating although I knew what he meant.

Thin for such big imaginations.

Great book for any artist! My teen son enjoys making comic books. He's used notebooks for so long but when we gave him this; he really liked it. The only thing he mentioned to me which lead to giving it 4 stars is how thin the books is so he'll have to make a small comic story.

Textbook content is good, but eBook compatibility is poor. Can only be viewed on the PC Kindle app, not through the web viewer or phone app. If I'd have known it was so limited, I'd have purchased a physical book.

A well-documented, real-life account of a controlled mind-altering drug study that's a great read

This was Ms. Estevez's first book and she wrote it in the third person about her experiences going through a carefully controlled synthetic psilocybin drug study. I was intrigued with the details of her experiences before, during and after this study, the courage it took for her to go through with it after her initial terrifying experience with this mind-altering drug, how she overcame her fear and how she went on to finish the study and learn and benefit from it. This was a good read and kudos to the author for sharing her story.
