Using the houses of Levittown, Long Island, as cultural artifacts, this book examines the relationship between the government-sponsored, mass-produced housing built after World War II, the families who lived in it, and the society that fostered it.
Beginning with the basic four-room, slab-based Cape Cods and Ranches, Levittown homeowners invested time and effort, barter and money in the expansion and redesign of their houses. The author shows how this gradual process has altered the socioeconomic nature of the community as well, bringing Levittown fully into the mainstream of middle-class America.
This book works on several levels. For planners, it offers a reassessment of the housing policies of the 1940s and 50s, suggesting that important lessons remain to be learned from the Levittown experience. For historians, it offers new insights into the nature of the suburbanization process that followed World War II. Rethinking a Tired Cliché

Although six years old, Barabara Kelly's Expanding the American Dream: Building and Rebuilding Levittown remains critically in focus. Not merely well informed about a specialized subject, it provides a comprehensive view of post World-War II American society, integrating culture, economics,politics and business history--enhanced with nostalgia for those who remember the times. I had read many journalistic diatribes over the years about Levittown, that icon of suburbia (the critiques being especially virulent among the urban design coterie) and was delighted to find that the author, who had approached the subject from a predictably P.C., academic (Marxist) stance became revisionist in the course of her study. Indeed, it seems that we still have something to learn from Levittown--if not as "urban design" then as "social engineering," for it's greatest accomplishmnet was providing a ladder for blue-collar Americans to get and increase a stake in the dominant, middle-class "American Dream" of the title. Although urbanists criticize the extravagant low density of the "sprawl" of Levitt's tiny boxes on grandiose suburban lots, it was this very generous provision of land that allowed the "ticky-tacky" boxes to be expanded by sweat equity and pay-as-you-go improvement into proper middle-class villas. Unlike most designers, who want final forms to remain unaltered, Kelly appreciates growth and change of buildings and community. Even where occasionally the original occupants remain at Levittown, they are not really the same people that they were when forming their households, but have different needs and wants. With changing ownership, of course, the consitutency of Levittown has changed even more--and indeed seems to be changing even now. Contrast Levittown with the ghettos of public housing, which are built to trap occupants in a static social melieu--even evicting those who improve their economic status. This book may be already a classic.

Levittown lives.

The book most often quoted in the bibliography of books about Levittown is Herbert Gans' 'The Levittowners', now having just read Barbara Kelly's book I think it should be considered the definitive study. I found Gans book overlong, with a rather dry writing style (why are sociology books like that?) plus he was writing about the third suburb, in New Jersey, built by the Levitt Brothers, a township that reverted to its original name of Willingboro.
Kelly writes in an easy accessible style and in nine chapters covers all the things I wanted to know. Chapter six was particularly interesting as it concentrated on the alterations three families made to their houses according to changing domestic circumstances. Most of the original ranch style houses (built in 1949-1951) have been changed and expanded over the years because, as one resident put it, the houses had no real storage space. In other chapters Kelly covers construction, design, the politics of the planned community, housing and the Government (policies dictated from Washington were crucial to the success of post-war suburbs) criticism from the creative community and architectural critics, naturally they did not favor such uniform housing communities (but how do they get round the fact that most of the folks living in Levittown liked it?) and finally in a Postscript the author brings the story into the nineties.
Excellent though the book is I do have some criticism, nothing to do with the author though. I found the very comprehensive and fascinating notes (seventy-four pages of them) in the back of the book should really have been made into footnotes at the bottom of each relevant page, it really is annoying to keep turning to the back to read a note, but first you have to remind yourself which chapter you are reading. There are several house plans included and they are rather crudely rendered in CAD with dreadful typography.
The book has twenty-five or so photos (mostly of the houses) and I think it is about time some publisher did a pictorial history of the place, I have a copy of 'Levittown: the first 50 years' by Margaret Ferrer and Tova Navarra but it is a very amateurish looking book with badly reproduced photos no better than snaps (which many are). I'm sure plenty of the 17,500 households in Levittown would buy a coffee table book about their history.

Lifelong curiosity satisfied!

Have heard of "Levittown" all my life and this book explains what it actually was, what it was purported to be, and what it came to be. Easy to read, reference notes in a separate section so there is no interruption to the flow of the story. It saved me a trip to Long Island!!
