When severely autistic Toby Turner was excluded from school for the third time for hitting and kicking his teachers, his family hit rock bottom. Toby felt so upset by his own aggression, he told his parents they would be better off without him.

Terrified, Toby's mum gave up her job as a nursery nurse to teach him at home while they found a place for him in a special school. Eventually, the only way the family could get Toby out of the house was by giving him headphones, sunglasses and a cap to block out the world.

After a difficult few years, the family was thrown a lifeline by the charity Dogs for the Disabled, which introduced Toby to Sox. The adorable three-year-old Labrador/Golden Retriever was trained by the charity to help children with autism. Within two weeks, he had turned Toby's life around. Together, as a family unit, and with Sox by their side, the Turners have learned to enjoy life again.

About the Author
VIKKY TURNER worked as a nursery nurse at her local school until taking time off to help support her son, Toby, who has autism. She lives in Oxfordshire with her husband, Neil, who is an IT manager, and their children: Lauren, 18, Jo, 15, Toby, 10, and Ollie, 7. They also share their home with Sox the dog and Charlie the cat. Vikky now enjoys volunteering as a speaker for the charity Dogs for the Disabled, sharing Toby and Sox's story and the amazing work the charity does for others around the UK.

An Adventurers’ dream book! Viking ships, Iceland, free-divers, dogsled races, sailing, tightrope walking and more!

I have read Jeff Blumenfeld’s book Get Sponsored: A Funding Guide for Explorers, Adventurers, and Would-Be World Travelers and it was inspirational, wonderfully written, thought provoking and very clever. Blumenfeld has a gift of being "the voice" and "telling the story". I really enjoyed all the personal stories, reflections and marketing techniques. Plus the photos in the middle section of the book enhanced the images I drew in my mind reading each adventure / strategic marketing plan.

While reading the book I ended up Google-ing so many things and checking out many of the websites, people and stories Blumenfeld wrote about. The journey continues, even after you finish reading a book thanks to the power of the Internet, you can check in and up on things!

I never knew about Tango, the pedal powered boat at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, Connecticut, or pareidolia which helps to explain a some 9-11 images that look like a devil face in smoke behind the twin towers. I also never knew or thought about those who turned down adventures, like the man who turned down being Amelia Earhart's navigator which Blumenfeld writes about.

I found the book Get Sponsored fascinating! I really liked the Will Stenger Foundation’s plastic tube that traveled the Arctic sea to Country Donegal, Ireland, and then the man that found the item, turns down a trip to NYC to be part of this cool historic event! People are so unpredictable! I've struggled with spelling my, whole life, and I found it hopeful, that spelling mistake "expidition" was the "it" thing that caught your eye. I am constantly working on proofreading. It's so amazing how people choose to spend their life or what makes someone passionate about a certain thing.

I rated this book 5 stars because it is an Adventurers’ dream book! With topics like Viking ships, Iceland, free-divers, dogsled races, sailing and tightrope walking, it's all so interesting. I truly am in a constant state of amazement in this life, and enjoy hearing about peoples adventures, endeavors and travels. Thank you for making me aware of becoming a citizen scientist and finding my niche to contributing to the further advancement of human kind, I never thought about that before. It is very exciting stuff!

The book covers so many topics and interesting people! A great read! I would recommend to anyone in the adventure community or those who love to live vicariously and dream really big!

Disappointed

I was so excited when I ordered this book; it had good reviews and Mrs. Ludy is a well respected author. However, I have been horribly disappointed. While I think Mrs. Ludy has very good intentions and her heart is in the right place, I can't help but feel like she was preaching from a soapbox when she wrote this book. She often uses her and her husband as the perfect examples of Christian living and encourages her readers to mimic their lifestyles. For example, she promotes her own style, saying that modest fashion for young ladies should come from business casual stores, rather than from more trendy stores, and she strongly discourages women from wearing sweats when hanging around the house with their husbands, because she thinks that's disrespectful. And while these things may work for her personally, they certainly do not work for everyone as she seems to suggest. And while I'm sure Mrs. Ludy didn't intend to come off this way, I can't help but feel like she is suggesting that all young Christian ladies should fit into a cookie cutter mold of femininity, without taking into account their own personal style or preference; they should blend into the background and be the people that hardly anyone notices. That being said, I think the book does offer some really lovely tips on becoming more ladylike, I just tend to disagree with a lot of her advice. I'm much more interested in becoming more feminine and ladylike in a way that doesn't totally throw my personality out the window. I was looking for a book that would help me better reflect Christ through the individual sense of style and the taste that He gave me, not a book that would require me to be more like Leslie Ludy to become more like Christ.

For the Godly Woman

This book was refreshingly wonderful. I'm always surprised at how much I glean from the Ludy's books. I must be honest and say I wasn't expecting much, based on the title. But, I took away soooo much from this book.
There is a lost art of true grace and beauty. There are so many lessons I learned on manners, forgiveness, selflessness through this book. It was such a blessing. Leslie loves Jesus and she always encourages young women to love him too above all else with a denial to self.

A wonderful gift to give to the young Christian women in your life. :)

A little too judgemental...

I like a lot of what the Ludy's preach, and for the most part our lifestyles match up in beliefs, desires and views on feminity. The only reason I can't rate this higher is honestly, I feel like Leslie does talk a bit too much about herself(putting herself and her beliefs on a pedestal) and she doesn't always have good Biblical support for her beliefs. Also I feel like she is too judgemental. A good portion of her book, and all the magazines i've read, bashes anyone who doesn't fit the standards in her head, implying they aren't Christian, and praises only those who fit her view of christianity. I felt uncomfortable reading about her talking so viciously about these women. If Leslie would lose the criticism and judgment I would be a whole hearted fan!

Finally, an academic and mulitfaceted examination of ghosts!

This book is the only one of its kind, from my experience. It is an actual textbook devoted to the examination of ghosts, haunts, and poltergeists from a myriad of academic perspectives like history, anthropology, media studies, comparative literature, sociology, psychology, physiology, and parapsychology. Each discipline has its own chapter, and the chapters are arranged into three sections: Sociocultural Perspectives, Physical and Physiological Perspectives, and Psychological Perspectives. Unlike most books on ghosts, this one cuts through the spin and sensationalism to bring the reader authoritative information on what academia knows about these phenomena. Also, the book's chapters are written by the top researchers in the field. This book will set the standard for a long time to come. It is highly recommended reading for serious students and anyone interested in the science behind what appears to be "seance fiction."

This is a real science book (so it takes some brains to read), so it is not for everyone. But, I thought it was cool because the content was diverse, balanced, and not hyped. It is pricey, but it is priced like textbooks. The best source there is!

One of the best (and only) books on the topic

I'm a psychology professor and have often been interested in this odd subsection of psychology. I absolutely loved this book, because it provided the best and most up-to-date science on the subject of ghosts. Interesting, well researched and inclusive of a lots of different scholastic fields and differing viewpoints.

Reduction of (hemi)cellulases production costs is strongly required to increase competitiveness of second generation bioethanol production. The final step is the fermentation of sugars obtained from saccharification, typically performed by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The current process is optimized for 6-carbon sugars fermentation, since most of yeasts cannot ferment 5-carbon sugars. Thus, research is aimed at exploring new engineered yeasts abilities to co-ferment 5- and 6-carbon sugars. Among the main routes to advance cellulosic ethanol, consolidate bio-processing, namely direct conversion of biomass into ethanol by a genetically modified microbes, holds tremendous potential to reduce ethanol production costs. Finally, the use of all the components of lignocellulose to produce a large spectra of biobased products is another challenge for further improving competitiveness of second generation bioethanol production, developing a biorefinery.

Lignocellulose conversion stands out as a key process for the sustainable production of renewable fuels and chemicals. The use of lignocellulosic materials for second generation ethanol production makes it possible to minimize the conflict between land use for food (and feed) and energy production. The lignocellulosic raw materials are less expensive and they present a more even geographical distribution than does conventional agricultural feedstock. Residual biomass such as agro-industrial wastes, agricultural and forest crop residues and the organic and paper fractions of municipal solid waste make up a large percentage of lignocelluloses. Moreover, second generation ethanol production and use show lower greenhouse gas emissions than the first generation fuels, reducing environmental impacts, particularly in terms of climate change.

Lignocellulose conversion into ethanol commonly involves a pretreatment to remove the barrier of lignin and expose plant cell wall polysaccharides, enzymatic saccharification of sugars with a cocktail of cellulolytic and hemicellulolytic enzymes, and fermentation of the sugars with ethanologenic microorganisms. The commercialization of the process to produce cellulosic ethanol is still limited due to the high costs of current technologies, above all the (hemi)cellulolytic enzymes required to hydrolyze the polysaccharides. The enzymatic hydrolysis may take place in a separate step followed by fermentation called separate hydrolysis and fermentation, or it may take place together with the fermentation in a simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of hexoses process or simultaneous saccharification and co-fermentation of both hexoses and pentoses. The ultimate objective is one-step consolidated bioprocessing of lignocellulose into bioethanol, in which all the steps take place in a single reactor where a single micro-organism or microbial consortium converts pre-treated biomass into ethanol.
