The Forbidden Duke
By Dee Foster
One social faux pas leads to a life as a social pariah for one. Guilt leads to a life of solitude for another.
Miss Eleanor, Nora, Lockhart has accepted her banishment to her father’s home, minimal contact with her beloved sister, and few friends. What she isn’t prepared for is the announcement that she will no longer have a home. With her father making bad investments he is forced to move to a cottage on his sister’s estate, a cottage too small for Nora. Living with her sister will be forbidden by her husband, the vicar. Returning to the aunt who sponsored her debutante season is out of the question as she was vehemently told to never return. Her only option appears to be as a lady’s companion; as long as her past doesn’t get in the way.
Titus St. John, fifth Duke of Kendal, lived a life as a rake of the first order until one night changed the life of a young debutante. Feeling partly responsible Titus has spent the last several years going from a rake about town to only making one social appearance each year – at his stepmother’s annual ball where he dances one dance with a female who is in need of a boost in society then he takes his leave. This social avoidance has earned him the nickname “The Forbidden Duke”; a position he embraces fully until fate brings the past roaring back.
Hired at her first interview Nora is determined to do her job while hoping no one remembers her. Alas, fate is not so kind; although no remarks are made directly there are many twittering and laughing behind their fans. Knowing his reputation for the first dance at his stepmother’s ball Nora is surprised when Titus asks her to dance; is this at his stepmother’s request or a decision all his own? A dance that leaves her a little flustered and reminding herself it is just a dance and she is no longer the naïve girl she was a decade ago; a dance that does indeed boost her desirability amongst many of the men attending.
Titus does his duty and dances the first dance. The fact that he chose Nora to dance with can be attributed to the guilt he feels at his part in her being shunned by society, not the fact that she fascinates him. A fascination that has him deviating from his normal routine and remaining for the duration of the ball, although alone in the study and not in the ballroom. He’s conflicted to learn that his dance with Nora earned her notice after all that was the point. Taken off guard when his stepmother announces she wants to give Nora the season she deserves he vows to help give her the type of life she deserves which has him making appearances in society he would normally shun.
Nora is appreciative of the season sponsored by Lady Satterfield but soon realizes she misses the quietness of her life before being forced to return to London. She’s unsure of the attentions she’s receiving from two gentlemen, especially when she all she can think about is Titus. Especially when he keeps turning up at society events, events he would normally avoid.
Is the appearance of the man who was the cause of Nora’s banishment, the increased intentions of her two gentlemen callers and his own realization of his feelings for her enough to Titus realize how alone he feels? Will it be enough to declare himself? How will Nora handle the truth about his part in her long ago disgrace? Does she care about Titus enough that it won’t matter?
The Forbidden Duke is the first in Darcy Burke’s new series The Untouchables. It is a well written tale of how one’s choices affects the lives of many. Nora is written as a strong woman who has accepted what her choices have cost her without wallowing in pity. Ms. Burke could have written Titus as man consumed with guilt that projects himself as untouchable and left it at that; however, she added subtle layers to let the reader see the man inside and how his guilt has affected his life.
The epilogue gave hints of more stories to come and I, for one, am looking forward to reading about the next Untouchable.
I enjoyed the book and would recommend to fans of the author, new readers and lovers of historical romance in general.

Stupid

The writing style was really great! The story was perplexing and rather stupidly constructed. I hope that makes sense?? Here is a woman who was absolutely ruined because she was caught kissing a man. Spent nine lonely years in exile and poverty! Forced into employment and lands a position that QUICKLY goes from companion to beloved daughter of the house. She vowed, all this time, to NEVER EVER do something that disgraced her or her family again. NEVER! So while she is being pampered and dressed by her new employer (which she accepts quickly making her rather mercenary) she becomes attracted to the son. Of course. And then one night, low and behold, gasp....she can't sleep! Which means she must go to the library an select a book in her nightie! That's original!! Hero is there and guess what? Gasp! She begs him for sex! Kiss me like I've never been kissed before and screw me! Great strength of character! She is to easily touchable.

Lovely Romance Novel
By Connie Fischer
St. Ives England - 1811

Miss Eleanor (Nora) Lockhart has learned that her father has lost a great deal of money in a bad investment and can no longer afford to support her. Nine years earlier, Nora returned from her second season in London with no prospects of a husband, in addition to leaving behind a scandal where she was caught kissing a gentleman. Since then she has lived a very quiet life with no prospects of a husband. Knowing she would not be welcome to live with her sister and husband, she decides to seek a position as a companion.

Titus St. John, fifth Duke of Kendal, is a man who prefers his own company. Titus was age 5 when his mother died and his father remarried a woman who has become a good mother to him. Now that his father has passed away, his stepmother has remarried and is now Lady Satterfield. She has decided to hire a companion.

When Nora is interviewed for the position, she is hired immediately. Lady Satterfield is very kind to Nora and includes her in with the friends that she entertains. In fact, she is so taken with Nora that she decides to sponsor her and give her a season. At age 27, Nora hopes that she is not too old to attract a husband.

When Nora is introduced to Titus as Lady Satterfield’s new companion, he remembers what happened in the past and how young rogues like himself were responsible for trying to steal a kiss from young ladies. Feeling bad for his past behavior he leads a very strict and quiet life taking his responsibilities of being a Duke very seriously. He does not tolerate the silly absurdity of society and avoids it. People know he prefers his privacy and they give it to him. Thus, he has acquired the nickname of The Forbidden Duke.

Titus generally does not attend soirees but begins to show up more as he has become attracted to Nora and she to him. There are other suitors vying for her hand, but her heart is with Titus.

Will he be able to open his own heart and allow her in? Will they find their own happy ever after?

This is a delightful story and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are very well written. Don’t miss this one.
